vane conversation" or qtdzzeig an Edior for anypurpose," and inform him that I have never yet been under the necessity of resort ing to aty such "tricks of evasion" to ac complish my purposes. As to his "evasive answer" to this "specious guise of friend. ship" it may suit the "Junior Editor" of the Vatchraan to do so and then acknowledge it, but it never suited the taste or "style" of Varton, who without vanity may say, that lhe ims always had the manliness to spean plainly and to the point under all circum stances. "Evasion" may answer some mons purposes, it never did and never will answer Warton's. The "Junior Editor in the outset of his remarks charges me with "watching his movements" and with the indelicacy and a want of a due sense of propriety in invading the sanctity of a private office, to report through the columns of a newspaper the transactions there supposed to have trans pired." Now Mr. Editor what did I say in my communication which warranted these gross charges ? Simply this : "The few gentlemen I saw active in the street, known as anti-Bank men, retired (most of them, I think) with the "Editor of the Watchman" to his office." Does this sir, warrant the Editor in making the attack that he has here done ? Does he feel himselfjustified in do ing so? I presume not ! Sir, I decline ansivering this portion of the Editors re marks farther than to deny flatly that "the sanctity of his office was invaded, his move ments watched" or that there was the slight eat "impropriety" in my allusion unless im propriety is made out of it, by his own con *,trnctions and remarks. Again Sir, we have a laboured argument from him that he was opposed to all the movements of the anti Bank party, and according to his assertions he and his paper both are free from all char ges connected with the movements of the party. Heaven forbid that I should im pugn or arraign the Editor upon his veracity. But let me ask him in all candor and real sober earnest if lhe thinks the people of this District takes the view of the course of his paper he would have them to do. I think not ! Not even the members of his own party,-to the contrary many of them speak out honestly the truth and say that it is the organ of their party. As to his own respon sibility in the nomination of the gentlemen referred to, the "Junior Editor has a right to speak for himself, but what is a little re markable an anti-Banik meeting was called, and failed to be held for the want ot a res pectable number of persons to compose a meeting, but the few who attended nornina ted through the press, without reference to their principles, two anti-Bank candidates, and from every quarter howerer high, dis claimers are put in on all hands that it was opposed by each and every one, who it was reasonable to suppose, had from their con duct participated in getting this thing up, the " Juifor Editor" of the Watchman 1i onget them. Nay Sir, pains are taken '{or nn ge~nt* nmu ride tine counotry aind tak i nistd no imnpress upon them 'that tiney are ipjh'ed to all such proceedings. Mr. Editor, much has been said by thne "Junior Editor" in regard to the "style of my irodnuctions" and thne "chaste" manner in whiichn I appear in themi, &c. and he turns mec oiver to tine "tender niercies" of tine sanme ~ithn a reconmmecndation that I shall remnian *the sole depository of nmy own secret." Sir, I amn nt ashamed of miy iprodunctions, they aire ant least free from duplicity or "evasion" of any kitnd, and though there many be defects in phraseology, and diction, decency is pre served and I think tine idea aund seintinment of thne writer plainly and fairly expressed or Sconnveyetm? T1hne dill'eretnce in eduction annd opportunity hans always been to mny mnind a sufficient excuse (to say nothing of oversight or inegligencee) for snuch defects; annd it is tine mo-nst contempt~ible of all small thnnigs, in my sight, for men to quibble or quarrel about "style" so long as tine above essenitials are preserved; and I for onte have tie synmpathy with the man wino is so precise as to requiire every word nnd syllable to be in exact con formity with the strictest rules of Syntax and Prosody. As for my secret, I did not sunpposo that it was one to tine "Jnunior Edi tor" of thne Wantchmann from tine mianner in whnich he speads of miy "fanicied conceal. mont." Buit lie may fid himself upon the wrong track hero too, and wvill, or I amn very much mistaken. Buit sir, I have already W- mnade this comnmuication too long anid in conclusion permit me to say that I hope it wvill be tine last time I shall be undier the niecessity oflauiminig your indingencee. But sir, I have been most unjnutiibly and mun necessairly attacked by thne "Junior Editor" of tine Watchman andm so long as thnat attack is kept up in tine tenmper and spirit exhnibitend by him I claim a right to be heard. For tihe present I defer mnaking other renmarks I in teinded WARTON.
