ExTnoRAOfDrxAtt BaryLooN AscENSToN. -A Paris letter of 8th instant, published in the New York Courier, says: ".Yesterday I was with( s?, as was all Paris, of a balloon ascension, which was perhaps unique in the history of 8mrosta tio:u, Margot ascended in 18410, mounted tpon a stagy but bth le and stag were in an ordinary car. Yesterday, M. 'oitevin ascended on horseback, and, without a car. The horse, a fine and spirited young white animal, was euspended beneath the baloon, in the piece usually occupied by the car. Bands pasired beneath the belly and well secured, left the animal in an easy position, With the legs free. Mr. Poitevin, clothed as a jockey, mounted the horse, which was saddled and bridled in the ordinary manner, and gave orders to cut loose. The horse seemed loth to quit his mother earth, and rentoristrated a little when he found that ho was being taken off'of his feet. But once in air lie became as motionless as though he had been struck with paralysis. He must, in fact, have been not 'a little aston ished; and it was prnbably that astonish tnent which struck him dumb and motion less. They moved oltand up rapidly, now hid, now seen amid the clouds in a north east direction. We have not yet had ac counts of the decent, and do not know whether it was Ih-ppily and safely affected." From the Georgetown Republican. P The vegetable phenomenon spoken of in tIhe following article, as having occurred last. year in portions of Tennessee, and again this year in the same State, is now to be seen in some lcationas on the Pee )ee in this State-particularly on the lower or eastern end of Snow's Island. On this Is. land tha "cane brakes" are extensive, fur. nishing abundant winter pasturage for cat tle. The cane this season, we ti:dcrstand, 'has run to seed,' as the expression is, and is bearing large quantities of grain resembling Cats. The hogs devour this fruit very greedily and fattn .upon it. What will be the future eIe ,this seeding upon these same brakes , purpose of pasturage, we are not pre' ed to determine. Noth. ing of the kind has ever before come under our observation, Vegetale Phecnomenon.--A brt this time t Pyear the cane upon several Islands in rive's of East Tennessee was discover. to be producing small grains which very uch resembled r'e, both as to size and Sshape. It grow in heads and was covered with chaff like that of wheat. The pro. duction was then considered remarkable, and so unusual that not even "the oldest in -habitant" had ever seen anything of the kind. The conjectures respecting the cause of the appearance of this unusual grain were very numerous--many persons (and some or them skilled in botanic learn ing) supposed that the cane had, by some mneanp, been noculated with wheat. This year we ;.are told that the cane throughout East'ennessee is bearing in-al - most inurgdjb)e quantities the same grin At someplacer it would not be dihicullt olect as mnuch .wenaty-fiva.,'r thirty ca s , .r- .gipe. iersona '-owning a landg ba'v" alread~y gat:r-d large quantitie-'of t' e grain, which they find makels a flour equal in appearance to that o~f wheat, and egalaly as paldatauble when cook. ed in the form of cakes, &c. ilaigs and fowls oat the grain as it falls from the cane with the samte greediness that they devour aniy other small graina. Antothier reamrka tble feature about the tatter is,that sosaoon Sthe grain heginas to muature the cane be. n~Ts to die, and the iaudications now are that all the cane in East Tennesnee will die out this season. It has been suggested to us thaat the far. mere, by collecting this seed, might saov at upon their woodhands, and thus have ex cellent cane pasture.i fair their stock, as there can be little doubt buut that the grain will germinate, especially in moist lands. -KokrleRegister.
