AN ENGLISIHMAN's-OPINON OF AMEIRICA.
*Mackay, in his recent work en this country,
-says "that America is the only pover unearth
that Great Britain han to dread." It is not
the political or military power of tie United
States that the British Governme tt has to
dread, qecording to Mr. Mackay, but the "sil.
-ent and unostontations operation of nature,
:and the progressive achievements of art on
-he continent of America."
A pleasant anecdote is related by Richards,
of Dean Swift, who, when his servant apolo.
gazed1for not cleaning his boots, on a journey,
because they would soon be dirty again, di
rected hint to get the horses in readiness im
vnediately; and, upon the efllow's remon
strance that he had not eaten his breakfast,
that it was of little consequence, as he would
soon be hungry again.
An article in Blackwood's Magazine says
that at least 25,00I0 persons perished by fa
mine in Ireland in 1847, in consequence of
the iss of the Potato crop, notwitlstanding
-ie British Government expended fifty mil
lions of dollars in purchasing food for the Imp
tilation. and extensive donations wore receiv
ed from abroad.
WNVIr rr CosTs.-Foreign capital in Eng.
iish'securities has, it is calculated, been in.
vested to the amount of $22,000,0(0, in con.
.sequence of the disturbed state of Europe
during the last eighteen months.
Sun-MAntINS PLACn.-We are informed
by out friend of the Eyastport, Express that the
company formed in this city for the purpose of
raising the relics of the British brig Plumper,
-are likely to be successful. 'T'hey have been
at work but a short time, and have already oh.
tamed quite an amount of specie, together
- with sundry other valuable articles. It will
be recollected that the Plumper was lost near
Point Lepruez, during the last warwith (reat
Britain, and contained specie to the amount
of $175,000 for the put pose of paying ofr sol
diers. Mr. Favor says he had the pleasure
of seeing one large bag of the dollars on his
way up.-Boson Bee.
NEW IAMPSHRE RAILoAD.-The Cran
ite State is working boldly in the construc
tion of Railroads. No less than 22 lines, of
the length of 834 miles, are in progress; and
as the expense of construction and equipment
is estimated at $:30,000 a mile, the total cost
will be $25,000,0(00; a pretty good round sum
for the citizens of New Hampshire to pay.
The New Hampshire Legislature at its re
lent session, proided that after the second
Tuesday in March next. the day of the Sate
election, no liconse shall be granted fer the
sale of liquors, except for medicinal or me
chanical purposes.
VIOLENT PnIEACHING.-A little boy being at
a sermon, and observing the minister very ve
hement in his words and boldily gesture, cried
out, 'Mother why don't the people let the man
. out of the box!" Then I entreat thee behave
thyself well in preaching, lest men say, truly,
this isJack ina box."-(Simple Cobbers Bo'y,
p, 27.
How NA-rhnua.-"Nave you tuade choice
of a profession!" inquired a young lady of a
gentleman, who was endeavoring to do the
agreeable. "l," replied the young gentle
.man, "am a journeyman shoemaker." "Gool
" heavings!" exclaimed the lady apparently
much disgusted, al thought you wereto be a
student."
