ny, lwihiah-l84MOO were in issue, a
verdiotwas rendered for-the defendants
a0greable to instructions from the presi.

The grunds assumed by the defence
were that the State of Pennsylvania had
not the powerto tax dividends declared by
a comipany Incorporated by a sister State,
although a portion of the works may be
located in the State to taxing, as that
would be an infringment of a compact
betwesen the States.
nA 0 Inal'ible Cure or Cholera.-Take
three table-Rpoons fullof castor oil, three
th D.Ipoons full ofthe best French brandy
. nd fory, drops oflaudanum, mixed welI
together, and lt the patient drink it of.
The body ,tust then be rubbed over with
brandy and a hot flannel cloth. Should
the condition of the patient not improve
within one hour,.and the nails, of the
*egers- begin to turn black, administer
one table.spoon full of castor oil, one of
French brandy, and ten drops of lauda
num. This generally throws the sufferer
into a profound sleep, from which he will
awaken perfectly well. This treatment
has been found most effectual in India,
where 6holera first appeared, and thou.
sands of persons were cured by this very
simple remedy.-Liverpool paper.
SUBSTITUTE FOR TnH PoTATo.-There
is a root called the Mayua, which grows
on-the Peruvian mountains, and is much
cultivated by the natives, which would be
p, good ysubstitute for the poatoe. It
grows with sometimes as many as fifleen
to a root; these are the average siis of our
potatoes;'Anli are round, kidney-formed,
or peg.top shaped, according to kind.
Thercolor.ls bright yellow, with rays of
reddish purple or scarlet diverging from
the eyes, Which are deeply set. When
out, a delicious order exhales. mingled
with a certain acidity- by no means repul.
sive, on the contrary, attractive to the
palate. : Eaton - raw, the root produces a
rich, smooth unctuous savor, which lasts
but a short thne and is all at once sue.
ceeded by a piqufant, popery taste, exei.

This spicy taste ailerwvards disappears and
leaves in the. mouth a pleasing perfume
tiI agreeable coolness.
- E awiolSoN.--We find in the last
nunbero dthe Medical Examiner publish.
ed by Lidsay and Blakiston, a description
of a new poison, originally discovered in
1847, by Sobrero, a Spanish chemist, and
' made the subject of some expelrime~nts
and an inaugural dissertation by Dr. WVil.
1:am. F. Jackson, of Muine. This sub
stance is obtained by a process similar to
that for procuing gun cotton, with the ex
ception that instead of cotton, the liquid
cal led glycerine, the well known swecet
principle of oils, is exposed to the reaction
of a mixture of strong sulphuric and nitric
acids, refrigerated. It is an oleaginous,
'honey-llke substance, wvhich sinks in wa
ter, but ls soluble in alcohol; and it was
the alcoholic tincture (the strength not
.mentioned) .which Dr. Jackson employed
in his experiments.
The general properties of this substance
which as yet has no name, are those of
a most powerful excitant or stimulant,
the effects being exhibited by the violent
action of the arterics and brain. One.
third of a drop was alwvays found sufficient
to quicken the pulse, wvithin sixty seconds
from sixty.five to ninety.five and even
one hundred and twelve beats a minute,
causing intense headache, prot ruding eyes
and scintillating vision, with disturbed
heart, &c. symptoms which subsided in
about half an hour. A larger dose pro.
duced similar effects, only of a more vio
lent character, the pulse being raised to
one hundred and twenty-four beats and
becoming hard and almost incompressible.
Three drops of poison killed a cat in
two minutes. Dr. Jackson compares its
effects to those of conilto; but considers it
"more rapid in its action, if not more fatal
in its results." [Pilia. Amcrican.
PLEASANT PnoGAMMs.-In a city this
fall, an extensive circus company gave
several exhibitions uinder a canvass. A t
one of these a missionary entered the
show, and taking, his stand by tile door,
presented visitors as they entered each
with aoneatly printed tract, entitled, "Sin.
nier, damnatiou arwaits you.'' Every one
supposed he was getting a programme of
the performances, and the effect on the
audience may he imagined, when on look. i
ing for the particulars of tihe "unequalled
display of equlestrian gymnastic end'
mrostatic talent" so liberally promised in
the large bill,., they wvere con fronted by
the gratifying piece of intelligence con
waied int the oniption above quoted. it
