The U, S. ship Massachusetts, Captaili
Wood, arrived last evening from Vera
Cruz, whence she sailed oi the evening ol
the I I th inst. Aihe Massachusetts bringi
ever 155 sick ond wounded soldiers under
ch arge of Dr. Tudor, besides the following
passengers: Mr. Joselils Ilarrod, Dr. Tudor,
V. 8. A., Pturser Bryan, of the navy, and
Mr. liOsWorth aml(I two ser ants.
Thlle follo wing deaths occurred on the

Pifles, and John Drew. of company 1, 7th
Infagtry, died on board before the Mas
ichiusetts left Vera Cruz, ani were sent "n

The troops referred to, have been sent
by Governor Wilson to scour the neigh.
borhood in search of guerillas, who during
the past night came vithin a mile.pr two
of the city walls, and stoie some forty or
fifty horses. It is not at all probable that
any of the robbers will be caught, as by
this time they are, or might be, in Oriza
be. The Vera Cruzanos are to-day con
gratulated by the editor of the Spasnish pa.
per here, upon the establishment of the
guerilla hanids on the road to Mexico, as it
had the effect to drive all the robbers away,
and render the passage safe for travellers!
He says: ''these robbers, who were princi
pilly composed of demoralized men of all
nAthmsn, have given way to atithoaircd corn.

the greatest dangers in order to make the
American feel the spirit of' vengeance
which animates them."
A great many regard the remedy as worse
than the disease. Pidre Jarauta's band is
a greater curse to the cirles in which it
moves, than any band of robbers has been.
Wherever he goes he draws stupport for
himself and his fellow-ntramilers frini the
ranchos about him. Every man's house is
his house, and woe falls on the poor grui
bier in a summarv form.
