R.nAILROADS IN T11E UNITED STATES.
The total length of the railway now actu
ally-coistrucied and in operation in the
United States, -.Anounts to a. little over
6000. miles, of which 500 consists.in short
lines connected wilh coal companies and
private estnblibliments; leaving 4500 miles
of swift steam conveyance.
FiRs-A fire was discovered in the Jail
on last Friddyeanud the alarmgiven to our
citizens. For soie time it was thought
impossible to save the builling, but throngli
the exertions of some individual, who at
oonsiderabe exposure, not without danger,
ascended the roof, the fire was subdued.
The Englies were on th- spot, aid were
efficiently used in extinguishing the fire.
The Jail was fired by one of its involun

Six months ago there were 7,000 tailors
out of empiloy - in London. They had r
meetin-r and the tailor's societies agreed to
assist all who woulti go to America. Tc
effect this, a passage ticket to America was

tailors have alrealy reached this country.
By the last steamer we received infirma.
tion that 3,000 stone cutters are out em,
ployment in England.. These knights of
