We culled in company with Dr. Malone a few days since to see a lady patient ef his who lias been suffering for years with cancer of the tongue. The lady is from Barn well aud received the treatment of several eminent physicians boforo placing herself under tho care of Dr. Malono, hut without deriving any bsnefit therefrom. Dr. Malone has only treated her six weeks and the lady is almost well. SAD CASE OF DUOWXIXG? We wore informed on Wednesday last of the melancholy end an old colored man came to on the 20th of last month, in Cooper swamp. It seems that tho old man--whoso name wc did not learn?had been informed that he was to be sent to the poor house, nnd not having a penchant for that institution, started in the night away from homo, hoping to find a hos pitable roof somewhere, under which, he might rest his aged limbs, nnd where visions of the poor house and its public charities would rot stare him in the face or disturb Iiis declin ing years. Being weak, he gave out in his jouruey through tho cold, biting waters of Cooper swamp, and sank down to strangle and to die. While life, however, was yet in his body, ho was Jbund'j/placed upon a log, and re quested to remain there until assis tance could be procured. Mr. Geo Smoak, upon being informed of the old niau's situation, harnessed up his buggy and made all possible baste to' the spot where tho sufferer wa3. But help came too \h\te. -The old man had fallen into the water, again, aud when picked up Avas stark and cold in death. It seems that no inquest has been held over his body. The Town Council held their regu lar meeting on hut Tuesday evening at which were present all of our venerable Oily Fathers. Mr. '/.. M. Wolfe's resignation as marshal was" rend and accepted. All marshal;- now employed were discharged from duly after the 15th instant and the Clerk instructed to receive applications for said officers, upon which an election for marshals will be held. The Committee on damages to properly by reason of opening Glover street were requested to meet and repot t at next meeting. An ordinance prohioiting Hucks ters from cooking in or obstructing the streets or side walks was adopted unanimously,- and the marshals in structed to sec that it was rigidly on fo reed. Is there not a vagrant law in the Revised Statutes? Is it not the duty of somebody to enforce it ? But if there bo neither of these?neither a S*atc vagrant law' nor a State officer whose duty it is to see it put into execution?is it not tho plain duty of our Honorable City Fathers to see to it that an ordinance of Council cov ering the defect, be passed at once? It is a wonder that we have not hnd more tires than those that have al ready blackened and laid in ashes so much of the beauty of our town Crow Is of pcoous, of both sexes, with no visible means of support, throng our streets every day and night! How do tiny live? Jln-t they not beg or steal to keep body and soul together? And to steal successfully it it not necessary sometimes to use the incendiary's torch to cover up the evidences ol the crime? Nay, has it not. been done right in our midst! Wo verily believe it has, and hereby coll upon our City Fathers'to do some thing to give our people a better guarantee of security than that they have had; or, even have now. - ?? ? ?! -? Di'SPA RA TB A TTEMPT AT B URG LAR Y? Early on Wednesday night as Mr. Ben Lee and Mr. Jimmy Hamilton were passing the store of Mr. D. Louts, they discovered that the glass had been cut from the transom over the back door of said building, and, suspecting thacall was not right, halt ed long enough to satisfy themselvos that someone was on the inside of the store. Other parties were at once in formed of the situation, when tho front door was opened, and a search made for the burglar. He was found iu the pea bin, almost covered up with peas. After being questioned considerably, he was taken to jail where he remain ed until Friday afternoon, when ho was brought beforo the Town Conn eil for examination. At this cxamiua tion he gave his namens John Wil Hams, and seemed to be perfectly un concerned as to his situation. The following is thosubstance of his story, as told by himself: Was born at Branchville. Is a son of Abo Wi litims. Used to belong to Barjh. Knows but one or two persons down there. Bcmcmbcrs one Loch. Bought candy from him wheu a boy. Been iu Ornrigoburg about eight days. Stayed with no body. Got into Mr. Louis' store by ^knocking the glasses out with his band. Went in there to get money. Suppose ho meant to steal it it you call taking what don't bolon g to you steal ing. Went into back r oom of store first. Found firo in chimney, and a match box on mantle pioce. Took tho match box because he wanted to strike light to sop by. About this time heard noise and at onco came to conclu sion that lie would not be allowed time to examine the money drawer, and otherwise inspect Mr. Louis' stock. Would havo escaped but for tho darkness. Whenever he would make for a door, wou'd hit upon a box or Bimct' ing. While thus perambulating was arrested and carried to ja.il, &c, ?.V.o. The fellow has a desparate counter auce, and is no doubt one of a gang in our midst who live bv stealing. Wc have a number of policenitn, and it is to be hoped that they will keep a sharp lookout. The burglar was committed io jail to await his trial a*, the Court of Sessions. jgy The citizens of this county are hereby notified that Mr. SchilHcy will keep open his Photogrph Gallery ou ly until February 12th. This will be the last opportunity the people of tho county will have to get good and care fully finished pictures of themselves aud families. Come then and bring the children along ?
