gentleman, and his academy is one of
the most flourishing in the country.

Dr. A M. Snider has begun his
flour mill in St. Matthews, and is
prepared to grind and bolt wheat in
a manner that will give general
satisfaction. We have seen some of
the flour turned out by Dr. Binder's
' mill, and unhesitatingly pronounce it
to be first class.

On Sunday last the hitherto
parched up earth commenced to
receive a drenching from above, and
there is no telling how much longer it
will continue to be "ducked,'' as the
clouds to day look as general and ns
anxious lo relieve themselves of water
ns at any time previous. The ground
wns certainly very dry before this
recent wet spell, and the crops in
many places were suflcring for seasons,
but from what wc can hear the
farmers arc willing to have a little
sunshine now for a week or two.
A German Singing Society was
organized on 'the evening of the 15th
inst., under the name of Deutscher
Sacngcr liund, with the following

his baud on these occasions has been
one of their most charming features,

lavbi with both ladies and gentlemen.
Seme low bred dug, who knew that
:i certain gentleman and lady were
roihg to pass a particular place in
St. Matthews, a few nights ago, to
revenge his spite against the iornier,
built up a huge obstruction in the
road out of rails, which ho hoped
would throw the party out of their
buggy. Thanks to the fates his
cowardly and diabolical plot failed to
effect his purpose.

their mail through the .Jericho Club
have been complaining lately of not
receiving their papers. We learn
that tho main cause is the di.-continu
ancc of the Club referred to by ihe
Postmaster. Instead of the mail for
that neighborhood being put, in the
Jericho Club, it is, we understand,

On Thursday evening about 9
o'clock, as Mr. John P?. Livingston
and Mr. A. F. Browning were stand
ing near the gate of Air. T. S. Mc
Grew, a band of six whito men, with
blackened laces, marched up and
made nil assault first upon Mr.
Browning, and then upon Mr. John
Livingston, trying to drag the latter
from his horse. A pis'ol shot from
Mr. Livingston put the cowardly
ru Ilia us to flight. It is hoped that
the pistol shot took ellbct. The
dastards were recognized and will be
prosecuted in the United States
Court.
Prices of grain and breadstuff?,
have an upward tendency in tho mar
kets of England, and there are indi
cations of a like movement in France
and Germuhy. This is occasioned
by the possibility of a war in which
all the great powers will be engaged.
Southern li?ssia is a vast grain depot
and large quantities are sent thence
each year to London and Liverpool
to supply the demands of England.
This is the grain that enters into com
petition with like exports from the
United States, and keeps down both
quantity and prices. In the event of
war, this supply from the Black Sea
will be cut oir, Germany and Fiance
will cease producing their usual
quantities of grain, and the demand
will press upon this country and
make trade both brisk and profitable.
TAXES
Tim 2dth the people will meet to
levy a tax for school purposes. Li t
the people attend this meet ing in full
and see to it that outrageous levies are
not fastened upon i hcin. When the
lime for the collection of taxis
arrives, great many of you grumble
about the amount you have to pay,
and abuse and course the Legislature
for making taxes so high. Now your
school district tax is left entirely
with you. If you want 1, 2, 3, or 10
mills you can make that levy. Our
advice to the public is, attend the
school district me lings, and if yon
think you can gel along with a .small
tax, levy if. and no more. Don't stay
at homo on the 2-lth, and next year
ciivse the Legislature because of high
taxation.

From what wc can understand the
?Ith of July barbecue by the Bcpub
licans promises to be a complete suc
cess. \Vo learn that there are
ono or two persons who object to the
celebration upon tho ground that it
is to ho a political affair. Now we
happen to know a little about the
matter and if any such purpose
entered the minds of its orignators,
they kept, it a severe secret.. The
object is to celebrate the Ith of duly,
and we think the Republicans have
as much right to tho day as any body
else, and wc trust those who are op
posed to tho proposed barbecue un
that day will not carry theif hostility
to it to that extent which will subject
thorn to the suspicion that they are
opposing the celebration because they
were not consul ted, or made the chief
cooks and bottle-washers of the day.
HARD TIMES?
A. lending merchant of this place
sent out n number of bills for collec
tion the other day, nnd was considera
bly disheartened when his agent
returned with only $2. This is an
evidence of the exceeding hard times
the country is passing through just
now. In many places men are
actually unable to pay their monthly
grocery bills. And yet ladies will
dress and dance aud fret after pin
backs aud fancy huts.
MURDER BY XJEKEO \VN IIANpS?
Alex Harrison and Lucy Willis
were married seven weeks prior to
tho 10th iust. On tho evening ot tho
10th Lucy was missing; on .Sunday
her body was found in Bull Swamp
Creek, Klizuboth Township. Mon
day morning L. A. Zeig I er, Trial
Justice, acting Cot oner, summoned a
jury of huptest. On Tuesday morn
ing Dr. J. A Hildebrand made a
post mortem examination, and an
nounced that the deceased came to
her death from an injury inflicted
upon the windpipe by forcible com
pression. The testimony before the
jury elicited the following facts: That
ll.c couple lived Unhappily with each
other; that on Friday night Alex
whipped his wife and told her be
would control her or kill Ihm'; on
Saturday he was plowing in a field
about fitly yards from the creek,
while liiicy, with a younger s' t r and
her mother, were, hoeing about two
hundred yards therefrom; about 1 1
o'clock the mother left to prepare
dinner, telling the younger sister to
hurry home as soon as she heard I be
horn blow. When the loon blew
the sister hurried home, Lucy telling
her that she would go by the plum
orchard and get some plums. The
plum orchard is about 75 yards from
the creek. The husband was plowing
between it aud the creek. Several
parties testify that they heard screams
in that direction, between 12 and 1
o'clock. The husbaud reached home
a-few minutes after 2. Said that he
! wns detained because be was desirious
j of finishing the field?and that ho
had done so, which was untrue. lie
j returned to work at the same point, in
the evening. Lucy was tracked from
1 where she was hoeing to the orchard.
I There her hoe was found. She could
I not be tracked froiii there. The tracks
j of two men led from the orchard to
i the creek, where the body was found.
! On Sunday morning her husband with
Kllis McMichacl found the body in
the creek. The ver.lict of the Coro*
: cr'sjury was that the deceased came
to her death by violence at the hands
of some person or persons to the jury
unknown.

1 see in your paper that all the
merchants in the Town of Orangcburg
have line and large stocks of goods on
hand for sale low down for cash.
There have been several pic-nics at
Andrews' i hJitrap. Mat has made
the pint, and the Spring Court is
over; for nil there lias been a big horn
bio wed, and not u word said about
the planting interest or the poor far
mer who has to support them all.
Now J have but a very small horn,
but 1 propose to toot it a time or two
with the hope thai some one with a
large horn will hear it and give such
a idow in the interest of the farmer
that it will be. beard all over the
country, (but dont .all blow at ouce.)
1 will say for my neighborhood we
have had fine seasous fur planting aud
working on tho farm, since the
lirst of April, and at this time crops
are doing well and generally clean of
grass pud looking line. Wo arc
about done cutting Oats, and I am
glad to say the Oat crop this year is
a much huger one than ever before
in this part of the county. Wc arc
just finding a ' the value of the Oat
as a crop. There is a great cry for
corn and money to buy with, that is
?juite a drawback on many planters,
I hope there will be more corn in lhe
country next year than this. Mr.
Kdit?r you must not forget to men
lion that, I had the good luck to be
at a little family fish-fry the other
day at Slab Landing. We had plenty
of very large Rook fish fried for tho
whole crowd, and 1 passed the day
very plcascntly indeed and till the
others lhe same. 1 did not have to
make the pint to get them cither.
