We are reliably informed that an English man by tho nnino of Dawson, con nected^ with'dho t harleston N'.-tm and I Courier, jaS^jbnc, of ^tg itjany* editors, was the indirect cause of the electiou of General Whipper. Dawson pre tended to dislike Whipper, and so managed by ? continually keeping Whippets n unc in his paper to make him vory popular with all fair-mind ed persons, and more especially tHe colored people.?National Jiepnb/ican. Tho Taxpayers' Convention. |'[Frdni the Charleston News and Courier.'] Tho meeting of the Taxpayers' ^Convention last Week, if wo count by events and feeling, was held an age ngo, and what we have to say of its proceedings must be said briefly. The Convention limited its action to recommending a thorough reorganiza tion of the Tax Unions, a registration of voters by the Tax Unions, and the preparing of estimates of tho proper and reasonable cost of carrying on the Government. It was doubtful,nt the time, if the Tax Unions could be made as numerous and as strong as was desired, and it is certain, now that the advice of the Convention will not,-, in form, be carried out. One organization for the jirotcction of the taxpayers is euotig, and that organiza tion, iu the present temper of the people, must be i the Democratic organization, with its clubs in every Township. That can do all that was expected of the Tax Unions, and more. That's all right. We arc ready for you Captain Dawson.
