The correspondent of the AVmv?anil

much surprise was manifested at the
sudden interchange of ehcuits between
Judges Cooke and lb-id, ns being pos

Tho.Mipronie court of the United
Sltttes.'Uui tho next decision day, will
probably render its opinion on the
constitutionality of the enforcement
net. of 1870, which congress passed to
protect tho colored vot-i s of Idio
south, and under the sixth section of
which numerous arrests and imprison
ments huvb been made. Tbe easo be
fore the court is known us tho Grant
(Louisiana) parish cases, where some
eighty persons were arrested lor "con
spiring, combining und confederatihg"
to deprive certain citizens of the Uni
ted Stalcs of the exercise of the (dee
live franchise. Some of t he defend
ants were convicted on several counts
of the indictment, but, on a motion
for arrest of jug merit; and on an ap
pcal to the United States circuit
court, Associate Justice Bradley and
Circuit Judge Wood were divided in
opinion, and on this division the ease
comes up to tho supreme court on ihe
constitutionality of, tho net of con
gress. The case was elaborately ar
gued at tho last term, and the decision
isiiwaited with much interest.

Wc tire pleased to sec it stated that
Gov. Chamberlain wjll be in ntten

will be a source of satisfaction to many
who have supported his administra

his intermingling with the people of j

strengthen him in the support of pur
good class of citizens. He is to be

Our little dig into its ribs has hurt
tho'Chnrlcston /Vetos ami. Courier. It
calls for its judgment upon us. Kow
we are, happily, not at all sensitive
about what the public may think.
We arc not afraid of being misjudged
by it. The Conservative public of)
South Carolina and ourselves are well
acquainted, und sustain to each other
cordial and confiding relations, and
it is beyond the ability, if it had the
will, of tho Arnrs(ni<t Courier to dis
turb them. The Conservative public
feel as wo do, that its flourish about
prosecutions is all in my eye, only
calculated, if not meant, to divert at
tention from graver matters which it
uses its power to keep in the back
ground. Its jeering, ridiculing and
and hounding on Dunn and Melton is
only nno'Jier form of tribute to other

it likes better?Columbia Register.
