POSTMASTERS COX VENTIOX.
A circular lias been issued by tbe
postmasters of the United States
calling for a convention of the third
and fourth class postmasters to meet
in Chicago on Febuary loth in order
to take unitei actions in presenting
their grevances to the national
government.
There is no question about it that
the low grade postmasters are im
poseu upon, ana mere j* no rcnsw
in the world wb}' it should be so.
Their position is one of very great
responsibility?much more in proportion
than that of first and second
class postmasters?and the pay for
services rendered is not at all commensurate
when we consider the
pay of postmasters of the higher
grades. However, it is the old
song: High position and little
work means big pay and little
labor, while low position means much
work and responsibility with little
pay. We trust that the convention
will result in good for all concerned,
because there is merit in the claim
of the postmasters.
THE (OLD ELSEWHEKE.
The present cold snap seems to
have pro vailed over the whole
country, North ami South, from Atlantic
to the Pacific oceans. Out in
the Northwest it has beeu extremely

whole of that section ft covered with
snow several feet deep. Railroad
trains are snowed in all sides, and
the telegraph lines are dow# in all
directions.
Many persons are reported to be
frozen to death, and the suffering
among both man and beast has been
very great. Several deaths ars reported
in this State from freezing.
, The cojd has extended clear on
down to Florida where the ther
moraeter is reported as registering
from 15? to 25? above zero. Even
at Tampfl the mercury fell to 16?.
which was never before known in
that sectwn. The orange groves

tain serious injury and involve tbe
owners in great finaucial losses.
