The Star Koute Trials.
After one of the longest ami most
wearying trials ever hold in this
country, a verdict has at last been
rendered in the Star Route cases
Although the public are sorely
grieved at this verdict of not guilty,
yet the counsel for the government
apparently labored hard and earnestly
to have justice meted out to
the thieves, but the secret strings
and wires of Dorsey & Co were too
strong, and pulled along with them
too much gold for the jury to pass
it by unheeded, and hence such a
verdict.
Deep dyed villainy was exposed
and shown up?one of the defendants
admitting his guilt in open
court. Proof as clear as daylight
was laid before the jury, but the tinsel
of reward glazed their eyes, and
tlie n-ood of the country was lost
o sight
of. This is another sad commentary
upon tke present system of
trial by jury The government spent
its hundreds of thousands of dollars
to bring to light this fearful piece of
- rMfbery, but for all of it the thieves
escaped, and Dorsey, the head centre
of the swindling ring?a man
who once occupied the high position
of United States Senator, a man
who spent thousands of dollars to
carry Indiana for the Republicans
two years ago?now lifts his head as
a free man, and amid his admiring
friends (who, of course, are of his
own stripe) proclaims with au air o!
boastfulness of the virtue, the moral
integrity and safety of liberty when
twelve of such fair and honest men
are its custodians.
He knew in his heart when he
snoke in this way that neither fair
ness, nor honesty of purpose, nor
moral integrity guarded his libertywhen
he was before that jury. The
iacts all go to prove the contrary.
Well, wo are forced to submit,
but however free lie may be from
the punishment which was his just
desert, his burning conscience, if he,
has any, will lash hira as lie movea
on in life, and the finger of scorn
will be pointed at him wherever he
goes. The precious jewel of character
is lost to him, and if his ill gotten
gains can compensate him for
that he is welcome to it.

How and Why is This I
Several months ago we received a
, - Tioatai coyd from the Department of
Agriculture at Washington stating
ihat at the request of the Hon John
IT. Evins a package of seed had been
sent to us, and asked us to report
back the result of the planting. Of
course, wc appreciated the kindly
act, and made preparations to give
the seeds a-fair test. After waiting
a month without receiving them, we!
dropped the department a postal
and asked what had become of the
seeds. We received no reply. However,
we are indebted to Col. Evins
for his kindness, and we know that
he intended the order to bo filled, but
IXJtJ Uieriia 111 tuc JL/C|;axtun/uw iwwvvi i
to perform their duty. Can it be
that the Star route way of -doing j
business is practiced in this service,
too, and that the seeds have i
been diverted from their proper
channel ? This might be a matter I
for our Members to look after, or
their constituents may not receive
what is honestly intended for them.
The Slayer Slaiii.
A few months ago great excitement
was created in Uniontown, Pa.,
at the killing of Captain Nutt by a
man named Dukes. It appears that
Dukes had ruined Nutt's daughter,
and fearing that Nutt would wreak
vengeance on him, he met and killed
Nutt, thus adding murder to his ruin
of the family. Dukes was arrested
and tried for the murder, but he was
acquitted. The indignation of the
good people of the town at this verdict
was almost beyond expression.
It was freely remarked that he ought
to be lynched, but the threat was
not carried out. Last week a son of
the murdered man, James Nutt, met
the seducer and murderer on the
street, and a difficulty ensued in
which Dukes was killed. The killing
of the scoundrel meets with the
approval of all the decent people of
that section. However, young Nutt
is under arrest to await trial, and he
has the sympathy of the whole community
with him.
? ^ ^?
Owing to tlio failure of petit juries
to do their duty, Lynch law is
becoming more frequeut all over the
country. Outraged justice cannot
stand idly by any longer and permit
known scoundrels to revel in their
villainy without meting out to them
the punishment they deserve, despite
the ruling of a perjured jury. It is
a sad state of affairs, but the continued
exertions of legislative bodies
all over the land to throw safeguards
a-ound the scoundrel to protect him
from the claims of justice are the
causes of the trouble.
It is said that the United States'
Supreme Court i* so over crowded
w th work that it is now two years
behind, and that for every nine cases
disposed of ten new ones arise, thus
putting them further behind every
year. This being the case, why not call
| in assistance? Why not, give Judge i
| Bond and bis court something to do |
I that would be of more honor and |
J profit to the country than his perse |
i cution of Southern Democrats ? "We ;
j think thiit is as good a way to get |
: out of their dilemma as can be hit j
l upon, and would add more honor to j
I the government than its tormenting j
: of innocent people.
