GRAFTING A NOSE.
< A Novel Surgical Operation in a
York Hospital.
A young man in Bellevue hospital
New York, is undergoing treatment for
grafting his middle left hand finger tc
the spot where his nose used to be, witL

the finger and transforming it into a
nose. He lays in the new surgical ward
with his hand immovably fixed to his
face. Over his face is a cap of plaster
of paris. He breathes heavily and in
quick, sbort gasps. Five years ago he
was admitted to the place suffering from
lupus. He was quie , intelligent and
sanguine. The lower eyelids of the face
had been drawn down by the disorder,
and several painful surgical operations
were performed upon both to correct
this and other abnormal conditions of
his ace and head. Ail thcs. he bore
wi 11 stoical indifference. After some
time, with skillful surgical treatment,
the germ of the disease was entirely
eradicated. He quitted the hospital,
but soon returned and asked for employment.
Within the hospital walls every
one knew and liked lain, and nooouy
apparently noticed his disfigured face.
Withont it was different. He found
himself continually the object of idle
curiosity and insulting comment.
"Tommy," the only name by which he
is known in the hospital, was given the
position of runner and servant to the
young physicians. He was much elated
at finding himself finally rid of the disorder
to which, from youth up, he had
been subject. Such, too, was his faith
in the skill of the visiting surgeon that
he besought him daily to make him a
new nose to replace the organ that the
disease had consumed. So earnest were
his entreaties, and such his vigor and
endurance, that it was determined to
perform an operation upon him.
" Tommy's" cot is tke first one on the
right-hand side of the new ward as one
enters. Unlike those of the other patients,
it is almost entirely screened
irom view. ADout tne wans are pictures
and engravings. "Tommy's"
temperature and pulse are watched with
the greatest anxiety by the attendants.
The trim, lady-like nurses, with white
aprons and Normandy caps, regard the
poor fellow with the greatest solicitude.
If the series of operations that "Tommy"
must finally undergo result successfully?that
is to say, leave him a wellformed
nose structure?it will be the
only one on record.?Cincinnati Enquirer.

In a lecture on the Valley of the Yoscmite,
delivered in Brooklyn by Dr.
Tiffany, the lecturer said: We found
ourselves standing among masses of
rock entang:ed amid shrubs. We were
able to look overman abrupt edge of
rocks thousands of feet down. The
cliff that overlooked the valley was
sheer, all the walls rose str^ght up and
tbp waterfalls fell like Dennons in the

wound its sinuous way below. The descent
to the valley, after riding six and
thirty hours, was extremely perilous.
We were nervous and timid. A rugged
trail carried us down. We lost half the
daylight as soon as we began to descend
The moonlight was shut out by
forests and shrubs. As we entered a
particularly black part of the trail, I
thought my horse had tour ears instead
of two. I said to myself, " If this is so
and this is the thing I am riding half
way down, what sort of a thing will it
be when I get to the bottom?" When
I emerged from the shadow into the
moonlight, I saw my boots were parallel
with his ears. As I was going out of

The vaiiey is a gorge on the Sierra
Nevada range. It is from six to aeveu
miles long and from a mile to a mile and
a half wide. If you would see how wc
looked from the cliffs, imagine a housefly
in an empty soup tureen. Of the
valley, ou the whole, no words can maka
an adequate picture. It is a new thing:
there is nothing we can compare with
it. It is apparent that no convulsions
ever rent these mountains apart or subdued
these hills. The only possible
conclusion is that the crust of the earth
was not strong enough to .-upport the

upon it and sunk down, thus creating the
valley. The mere suggestion of such a
po3siblity creates awe in the mind o!
man. There is much of quiet beauty in
the valley. It contains 1,100 acres ol
meadow land, and in it grow the pine,
the cedar, the oak, the California laurel
and myriads of lovely flowers. No
artist can represent the heights on canvas;
nocameracan reproduce them.
The Bridal Vail falls is not the great

respects it is the most beautiful of all

we remember that the cliff at Niagara is

higher. The lower fall is 900 feet, and
the upper one a sheer plunge of 1,600
feet. It is so placed that it seems likr
one white sheet of falling splendor at
distance of two miles.

An English scientific journal says it is
thought that a crisis in the history of
Mt. Vesuvius is approaching; either
there will be a great discharge, such a3
will terrify the neighborhood, or, as is
, 1 more likely, there will be an overflowing
j of lava covering the cone with a mantle
! of fire, and silently inflicting more de!
struction on property than a grand eruption.
Vesuvius has been in an active
state now for several years, and Professor
Palmieri has from the first prophesied
that the eruption would consist in
the overflowing of lava.
Silesia, in which fearful destitution is

In a recent lecture on " Eclipse Problems,"
Professor Young, of Princeton,
said, with relcrence to the observed increase
in the rapidity of the moon's motion,
that the discoverer led at first to
the opinion that the moon's orbit was
growing shorter, and that ultimately
the moon would come down upon us.
More accurate calculation, however,
shows that there is no danger of so disastrous
a result. The moon is not coming
nearer, but our day is growing
longpr, owing to the friction of the tides
upon the earth's surface. The tides act
like a brake, and slowly diminish the
speed ol the earth's rotation.
New York's total imports for 1879
amounted to ?424,189,123, an increase of
$121,000,000 upon the total for 1878. Of
this increase nearly 23,000,000 were in
free goods, ancf $65,000,000 were in
specie and bullion. New York, wlr.le
receiving two-thirds of the imports, has
usually shipped but forty-five to fifty
per cent, of the exports, but this proportion
has increased during the past year.
The gain in the exports in December
was about $6,500,000 over the corresponding
total of December, 1878, and
the total exports for 1879 amounted to
$371,0-16,609, against $362,522,088 exported
from New York in 1878, and
$326,431,140 exported in 1877.
The Boston Herald has discovered a
"bank" in that city which receives deposits
from single ladies only, and in
sums between $201 and $1,000. No deDosits
are received from persons owning
a house, and the very comfortable rate
of eight per cent, a month is paid for
interest. Deposits can be drawn upon
call on any day but Sunday. The institution
is said to flourish and contrives
to evade the law. These spinsters
who are credulous enough to
believe that any institution would pay
them annually 896 for the use of 8100
are not very likely to attempt to withdraw
their deposits, and those who
ka^ become sufficiently wise to see how
foolish has been their confidence are
quite likely to silently endure their
lossess. A more inhuman way of preying
on the trustfulness of unprotected
' women and a stronger illustration 01

1 A Washington correspondent recalls
the generally-forgotten fact that to Mrs.
Langdon, of New Hampshire, whose
husband was a member of Congress,
are the ladies indebted for permission
to listen to the debates and proceedings
of that body. They had been originally
excluded from the galleries, but when
the famous Jay treaty was brought
home there were heated debates in the
House for and against its ratification.
One night at a party Mrs. Langdon expressed
her regret to Fisher Aiues, of
Massachusetts, that she could not hear
the arguments, and especially his
11 speeches. Mr. Ames gauanuy repuca
1 tliat be knew ol no reason why ladies
should not be permitted to bear the de
bates. "Then," said Mrs. Lnngdon,
' 44 if you will let me know when you are
1 going to speak. I will make up a party j
ot ladies, and we will go and bear you." j
It was done, and the galleries have
always since been graced by their pros-1
' ence.

A table furnished by the Jhtilroud {

interesting. From it, it appears that in
' the construction of these great highways
1 of travel and commerce the western j

1 prospects for railroad construction in

Graphic, are excellent. It is now much
more costly to build roads than it was
a year ago, all kinds of materials having
advanced in price, but the returns are
large ana reasonably certain and the increase
in cost will hardly prevent the
established railroads from being extended.
Indeed, the danger is that there
will be too much enterprise and activity
in that direction rather than too little.
The Unspeaking Species.
A novel fight recently occurred at
Atlanta, Ga., between a rooster and
two small but vicious dogs, it lasted
several minutes, during which the bird
lost a great deal of his plumage and
most of his tail; but at last he beat the
dogs all hollow, and they retired, sadder
and wiser animals.
Mr. John W. Wheeler, of Tuscola,
111., was awakened by his dog springing
upon his bed and clawing at the bedclothes.
Startled at the unusual conduct
of the animal he'got up and discovered
that a fire was raging in the
lower part of the house, and he barely
escaped with his family and the dog.1
The Buffalo Courier tells of a remarkable
canary bird in that city. After
long months of patient training, during
which time the bird was kept in a dark
place and had a certain tune played to
him several times a day, the little
singer did actually succeed in imitating
the familiar melody, and can now be
heard all day singing this song, very
seldom forgetting his training to fall into
the old canary bird-like strain.

fight was watched with exceeding interest,
and at last, by some good and

If you hand three pennies to the
stamp-clerk at the postoflice he infers.
Ilia inference is that you want a threecent
stamp, and he shoves one at you
rather quicker than iightning. His inference
holds eood on two cents and a
single penny, and lie hits it ninety-nine
times out of a hundred. He, however,
got left yesterday. A bulky, slowmoving
old woman carte in with half a
dozen things to mail, and her first move
was to hand in a three-cent piece. He
retaliated witli a green stamp, but site
shoved it back with the remarks "Who
said I wanted a three? Give
me three ones."
She licked them on with great care,
and then Jtanded in three pennies. The
clerk this time threw out three ones,
but she rejected one of them with the
mdignant protest:
"What are you trying to do? I want
a two and a one!"
In due time she had licked these on
as well, and then she handed in four
cents. The clerk scratched his head,
hesitated, and threw out a three and a
one.
" See here, young man, you're getting
perfectly reckless!" she exclaimed as she
glanced at the stamp. " I want a
stamped envelope for that money!"
She got it, and the cleric made up ins
mind that he would catch her on the
next sale or resign his position.' She
posted several packages; and then
sauntered up and laid dowu a penny.
That could only call for a penny stamp,
and the young man chuckled as lie tore
it oft".
"What are you giving me now?"
snapped the woman, as she drew herself
up.
" A penny stamp."
" Who asked for a penny stamp?"
"You put down a penny."
"So I did, but I was a penny short on
carrier No. 8 yesterday and I wanted
you to hand it to him."
For the next hour when any money
was laid down the clerk asked what

The Use of Tails.
A very important function of the tail
of the yak, cat, squirrel, and many other
animals, to which I drew attention some
years ago, has escaped the notice of
Prof. Mivart. It is that the bushy tails
of these animals serve a very important
function in nreservine their bodv-hcat
during their nightly and winter sleep.
In cold weather animals with bushy
tails will be found lying curled up with
their tails laid carefully over their feet
like a rug, and with their noses buried
in the fur of the tail, which is thus used
exactly in the same way and for the
same purpose as we use respirators. I
have a Manx tailless cat, who cannot,
of course, cany on his nmction, but he
makes a very good substitute for it by
using the back of one of other cats.

An Eye for an Eye.* [
A goodly number of persons who for- *

A Wonder ! I
In most of the papers may be seen an an- ^
nouncement of a new rubber boot mado by
the Candee Rubber Co., of New Haven, Ct. j
This notable boot maika a new era in tho I
manufacture of rubber goods. The boot is <
called the "95 Per Cent. Sterling," to denote |
its high quality, and is covered by no less jj
then eoven patents, all owned by the Candee
Co.! One of the boots r.plit to show its exact
character, is on exhibition at the stores, and
shows an article at genuine service, that is
seemingly iudeatr act able. Tho company warrants
these boots three months, although
there is abundant testimony that the boots
will stand six months' hard wear every day.
The " Candee " is the largest rubber goods
company in the world, and its warrant is
equal to a bond. Ono of the patents referred
to covers a binding for the top of tfca^log, in
which aro engraved spaces for evc^Hy and
month in tho year, so that the storekeeper
can punch out the date of sale, and so fix beyond
dispute the dirfatiorfOt-m?thipo months'
warrant. Altogether, it is the most wonderful
boot that has yet appeared.
