out of what arc uulike, and,

never was a treat or field for the exercise
of the highest otd-T of diplomacy

Our Legislators are in the position of
the British statesman who found in

of whicb party consisted. that he was j
as near the most con-vrvative of the op- i

The Itrniocrats in Congress.
We have observed with no little feelings
of regret a widespread disposition
on the part of our contemporaries to
find fault and quarrel with our representatives
in Washington. Of course,
we mean national, not State. It is ah
ways to be expected that when a man
enters public life be i--to be the subject
of criticism, and frequently of misrepresentation
auii abuse. As a consequence,
individuality and independence ninety- |

it is true; is owing. to n very grat ^x- j;
tent, to the deoineriuv .of the times, j
and a very great lack boih of . 'atotuaii- ,
ship aud moral courage. It is resort-d !
to, too, entirely too much by our <i itir*;
and now we are .juite in - artiest when '
we 6<ay that such recently has been the
course of a largo portion of our press in
discussing the present unfortunate and
excitable state of affairs as tliey occur
in the Capitol. We do u??t pretend to
say that we justify all that has tnk-n
place, but it is the height of absurdity
to presume for a moment, that such
