want. Already the plea of insanity is
urged, and the able ex-Judge Curtis, of
New York, has been employed to come
down and uellud this ved handed vior.i.'-r
of the law. Judge Curtis is an
adept and expert in ail such cases, and
proved bis great power in the celebrated
HeluiboM and liowdcn will case,
and many others. Having established

know, and doubtless it is hoped and

with a fair chance of success, his trial

Democratic candidate for the Presidency

again, if he knows what is best for him.
Very few of the Southern people have
any confidence iu him dow. Any man.

jority of the people elect him to it, but
will allow himself to bo bulldozed and
frightened off by a lot of unprincipled
politicians, is notworthy of the support
of his countrymen. If he bad possessed

would now be in the Whito House, instead
of the fraud who occupies it. Out
upon such men ! We want nothing to
do wi'.h them, and no true man in the
South does, either. We want a man.
A strong man. A man who has the
nerve to sustain him in any position

were beseiged by tho Zulus, but they
were intercepted and cut to pieces1
Then Co . Pearson attempted to escape

Pistols.
There ought to he si-me move made
towards enforcing the law against
carrying pistols by the citizens of our
S'ute. It the same experiment was
tried here as was ] radioed by Judge
Lester, of Georgia it midlife prove
beneficial. It is us follows :
' Judge Lester was holding court in
one of the mountain counties of North
Georgia, :?n<l right in the ini-ls!. of the
trial of a ease he asked the attorneys to
suspend a f.-w moments, and told the
sheriff to lock the court house door and
let no man pas? out without permission
from him. Then said the Judtrc, in hi."

saw a pistol on a man in this room a
few moments ago, and T con not reconcile
it to my sense of duty as a peace
officer to lot s::ch a violation of the law
pass unnoticed. It may be that it is
my duty to t:o before the grand jury
and indict him, but if that man will
walk tip to this stand and lay his pistol
and a fine of one dollar down here I will
let him off this time; otherwise I will
iro before the grand jury and testify
agsinst him."

it and a dollar bill upon the stand.
"This is all right again," said the
Judge; "but you arc not the man I
speak of."
Thereupon a large man, just outside
of tho bar, walked around, ran his hand
in his bosom, and drawing out a liuse
old army piste', laid it and a dollar bill
on the stand.
"I declare." exclaimed the Judge;
"if this don't beat all! You have done

man that I saw with the pistol."
This process went on until nineteen
pistols and nineteen dollars were lying
on the Judge's stand. Then there was
a pause, and it appeared as if the crowd
wrs pretty well disarmed; at least if
their owners did net senm disposed to
giro thorn up.
' Gentlemen," resumed the Judge,
"here are nineteen persons who have
acted like men in,this business, hut the
man that I saw with the pistol has not
come up yet; and now," continued he,
pulling out his watch and looking toward
the far side of the court house,
"I will give him one minute to accept
my proposition, and if lie does not do it
in that time I will point him out to the
Sheriff and order hint taken into cus
tody."

then, coining slowly forward. laid down
their pistols and their dollars. As
they turned to leave the Judge said :

Then Judge Lester gave a short
lecture upon I lie cowardly, foolish and
wicked habit of carry concealed wea
pons, and assured his audience that in
the future the law would bo strictly enforced.
The court then proceeded with
its regular business, and itis needless to
add that in that county the habit of
carrying pistols was broken up."
