Good News from Hampton.
The latest news from Governor
Hampton reports that he is getting
much better, and is now considered ous
of danger. The appearance of his
wound couotinues to improve, and the
anxiety which basso long prevailed has
given place to an assured confidence in
his rapid recovery.
Tho Old Year.
The year is about closinsr, and as the
new ope comes wc can look back upon

boon. As a country, we have been
Messed with peace. Nowhere has the
blood of our countrymen been spilled,
or our flag insulted, save by a few occasional
onslaughts upon the frontier.

fur}-, and the homes of a large portion
of our land are now draped in mourning
Political acrimony runs high, and
the surging waves of blood that angrily
rolled so high during the late war seem
hard to calm. The harvest, as a gene^
ral thing, has been abundant, and our
garners bear heavily the fruits of the
earth." The winter thus, far ha-' been
mild, and rnnch of the suffering 'that
would have taken place on account of
the terrible financial pressure is thereby

prices have come to hard pan, and
the irresistible fact forces itself upon all
that economy and work alone can give
success. Upon tho whole, there is much
to be thankful for. Our own State has
baen clear of disease, and although she

great loader, yet ia politics she glories
in the resurection of her own government
unditturhcd. No military tyrant
waves his crest over bcr bosom, and the
future gives no ugly thrcatenings of an
approaching storm. Though trouble
and actual want pervades to a great extent
her whole society, yet the lessons of
tho past should be as warnings for the
future, and with a renewed energy
much can be done for recuperation.
Let us then, as the old year goes by, try j
and remember its errors, and build up;
