Fruit Tree Borers.
Let not our readers forget that
much of the weakening of our fruit
trees is owing to absolute starvation,
caused by the workings of stem'-bors
ers. The supply sap upward is cut
of! by every hole which they make,
and is just so much put in the way
of the tree getting all the food it
needs. It is no use to manure trees
and keep our eye on all other cultural
details if these rascals are per
mittcd to continue their depredations.
This is one of the best seasons of the
year to look after and destroy them.
The egg laid during the summer has
now developed to a considerable
" worm," and it is working its way
down between the bark and wood,
or even into tho wood, so as to get
comfortable quarters for the winter.
Their presence can be readily ascertained
by noting a little fresh looking
matter like sawdust near the tree
at the surface of the ground, which
the larva ejects in their boring
course. To destroy them, get a
trowel and dig away a little from the
stem, so as to find exactly the opening
of the channel made by the insect,
and then thrust down a piece
of stiff wire upon it, which will gen?
crallv end its days.
To many this looks like a considerable
job, but a smart hand can get
through with several hundred trees
a day in this search, as the fresh
dust affords an unerring clue to the
direct whereabouts of the marauder.
Fruit Tree Food.
-For peach; apple and pear trees
there is no better plant-food than
common ashes scattered over the
surface of' the soil 'under the tree.
Cinders from a blacksmith shop or
foundry are excellent for the apple,
pear and cherry. Common salt
scattered over tho surface of the
earth under pear or apple trees
about as thickly as you do wheat
when seeding, is highly recommend-,
cd as an antidote to blight. This
also secures protection against the
aphis on pears or other fruit trees.
The aphis is a small woolly insect
that works on the root9 of apple and
pear trees, frequently destroying
life.
If your trees show a sickly ap>
pearance and there is no sign above
ground of disease or insect depredation,
look beneath the surface of the
soil for tho borer worm, aphis or
louse. Take care of fruit trees if
you regard them as worth attention,

As it is generally useless to try to
persuade a horse to take medicine
voluntarily, owing to his inability to
appreciate its advantages, combined
with his dislike for the taslc, mechanical
means arc resoited to. An

just been invented. It consists of a
wooden gag-bit, which is placed in
the horse's mouth and attaohed to
the headstall. By pulling a cord
the gag is worked by levels, compelling
the animal to open its
mouth. The stem of the medicine
receptacle, which looks like an exaggerated
tobacco pipe, is then
inserted in the bit and clamped
therein. Then by opening a valve
in the receptacle, the medicine previously
placed therein runs down
the animal's throat. Also in the
stem is a kind of fork, which, when
a pill is to be administered, holds
the same until it is washed down by
a charge of water poured into the
bowl,

Paliiloas Operations,
The new antiseptic method of
surgery which has but recently been
introduced into this country, has
been twice successfully tried at the
Alexinn Brothers' hospital, Chicago,
recently. In eacu case a leg was
amputated, and tlio patient rapidly
recovered, experiencing no pain
whatever from the use of the surgical
instruments. The method of
operation is as follows : The surface
of the limb to be amputated is first
sponged with a solution of one part
of carbolic acid to forty of water into
the wound. This mates the operation
perfectly painless, and does
away with the necessity for using
chloroform or ether. The wound is
then dressed with oiled silk, saturated
with sulphate of lead, which
indicates the presence of sulphate of
hydrogen by turning black, and
shows whether the wound is suppurating.
Six layers of medicated
sauze are then placed over the
wound, and the whole is covered
with Mackintosh cloth.
Eat Apples.
Apples, in addition to being a delicious
fruit, make a pleasant medicine.

cd in an hour and a half, whilo boiled
cabbage requires five hours. The
most healthy dessert that can be
placed on a tabic is a baked apple.

system, often removing constipation, '
correcting acidities, and cooling off
febrile conditions more effectually ]
than the most approved medicines.
If families could be induced to sub- .
stitute apples ripe and sound for ,
pies and cakes and sweetmeats, with 1
which their children are frequently
stuffed, there would be a diminution
in the total sum of doctor's bills in a <
single year, sufficient to lay in a j
stock of this delicious fruit for the
whole season's use. - j
