CONVENTION.
AN HARMONIOUS BODY.
j
Deliberate and Thorough
Work.
I
The crowa of spectator.*, from all
parts of the county, which gathered at
the Uourt House on Thursday lust to
witness the proceedings of the county
nominating convention, exhibited the
interest which was felt iu the work to
he performed, and the report of the proceedings
below will show that but few
could have went away with uny other
I .
feeling than that of satisfaction. Ofj
j course there could be no body assembled
f?>r such a purpose, without a eer- j
tain decree of feeling exhibited when
disappointments accur, but upon the
whole the convent ion of Thursday was
an harmonious body, performed its work
well, and for these characteristics has
surpassed any assemblage of a similar
nature held in Kershaw county for
years.
Promptly ot 11 o'clock the convention
was called to order by the county
chairman, W. 1>. Tranthaui Esq., and
was opened with prayer by Rev. J. C.
Richards, of Kiberty Hill.
The chairman then spoke as follows :
Ff.i.i.ow Citizens :?We have met
today, in response to the call of the
l)em ocrntie Executive Committee, for
the purpose of nominating candidates
lor Ftatc Senator, members of the House
of Representatives, School Commissioner,
County Commissioners, Judge
of Probate and Coroner. Perhaps this
is the most important Convention that
has ever assembled iu Kershaw County.
'In ray judgement it marks the turning
point in that long lane of adversity aud
disaster in which we have trod for so many
years. It is the beginning of the last step
in the programme of our redemption.
And if I hove correctly interpreted the
foelinpH of the Democratic hosts whom
we represent, they have but. one determination,
and that is forever to crush out
Radicalism from our midst in November.
liy unity of purpose and harmony
of action in the Democratic party this
mn be done. I may add, the public
demands that, come what will; it
must be done. I deem it unnecessary
to remind the patriotic ccutlouian com
posing this convention that the manner
in which they shall discharge the grave
and delicate duties developing upon
them will exert a powerful influence
for good or evil upon the prospects of
our jarty. Kroui this day w? may (
reckon our perfect deliverance; or from
it we may date our hopeless ruin and
lasting degradation I, therefore, implore 1
you most earnestly to discard from your 1
minds whatever bitterness of feeling
that has been engendered during the
canvass, and to let vour deliberations be
characterized by the highest regard for
I the public good. I)o this, and you '
wiR merit and receive the hearty will i
done or <?H ^ood citizens, while your

shall discharge tho duties ot my posi-1
tion with fairness and patience. I
hardly hope to avoid some errors; bat,
with your help nnd indulgence, the I
work of the convention will be done in
a manner satisfactory to our constituents.
Messrs. ?I. G. Garrison and W. K,

the convention.

by the chairman of each delegation.
On motion of T II Clarke a committee
on credentials was appointed, composed
of the chairmen of the different

for deliberation.
After the Committee on Credentials
had been out about an hour and a half

received information that the work they
had to perform would occupy sometime
longer, ami suggested that the convention
