IRISH SONQ. [Suggested by four lines in Banting's collection?to the air of "The Rejected j Lover."] On Innisfnllen's fairy isle. Amid (lie (dooming bushes. We leant upon the lover's stile. And listened to the thrushes; When I first sighed to see her smile, And smiled to see her Mushes. Her hair was bright as beaten gold, And soft as spiders spinning. Iler cheek out bloomed the apple old That set our pareuls sinning: And in her eyes you-might behold My joys and griefs beginuing. In Innisfallen's fairy grove I hushed my happy wooing. To listen to tlie brooding dove Amid the branches cooing; But oh! how short these hours of love. How long their bitter rueiug! Poor cushat! thy complaining breast Willi woe like mine is heavine. The date of the asrJension has net yet been fixed. Employer and Employed. Whenever either employer or employed forgets that there is a community of interest between the two, both are sufferers. This is true of all kinds of business in which the two classes coute in contact. The employer who has no other interest in liis help than to get out of them all that their strength will permit them to do, will soon find tnat his employees will become equally as selfish, and that not only the least possible amount of labor that will prevent their discharge will fie done, but that what is done will lie imperfectly performed, ami the employee who has no other interest than to get his mono?, is a detriment to any man who employs him. In some establishments. and on some farms, a stranger would he unable to tell, from the language or actions of the help, that they were employees. Whenever they speak of the affairs of their employer, they don't speak of thcin as if he was wholly responsible. and that they had no responsibility whatever, but their language conveys the idea that they feel their or.i responsibility, and that the success or failure of the businers i? a matter of anxiety to them ; and their actions accord with their words. Nine out of ten employers greatly appreciate such a manifestation of interest, and it really seems to lighten the burden which alwayj necessarily rests upon a business man. If an employee has such an interest in the affairs of his employer, there is no mistaking it. It will show itself on every conceivable occasion ; and if he has been so unfortunate as to find a man who does not appreciate his merits, they will not long go unrewarded, for others will see them, and be glad to avail themselves of them. It is, no doubt, the case with human nature, that it is selfish in all of its relations of life, and perhaps the great ma jority of men are tr>n apt to slight their dutirs, lirt/an IIIMCU'4 Ul m/irji VUI ^ mill- UJMM. honor, and performing services for others as they would perform the same service for themselves; hut there are men, awl a great tnanv of them, who arc strictly conscientious in the performance of their duties as employes, and if is such men who will always win.? It is said that so acute is tbc sheep's sense of hearirni that she can disr tinguish the cry of her own lamb among as many as a thousand others all bleating at tbc same time, and the latnb. too, is able to recognize its mother's voice, even though it be in the midst of a largo (lock. James Ilo^rir. who was a shepherd as well C-CT' as a poet, tells us that it was very amusing to watch the sheep and lambs during the shearing season. r> O While the sheep were being shorn, the lambs would be put into a fold by themselves, and the former would be sent to join their littlo ones as soon as the operation of shearing was over. The moment a lamb heard its mother's voice it would hasten f-om the crowd to moe* her, but instead of finding the "rough, well clad mam.v" which it had left a short time before, it would meet a strange and most deplorable looking creature. At the sight of this it would wheel about uttering a most piteous cry of despair, and perhaps run away. Soon, however, the sheep's voice was heard again ; the lamb would thereupon return, then once more bound away, and sometimes repeat this conduct for ten or a dozen times before it fully understood that tho shorn ewe was in reality its mother.? Wood. Tomato Leaves. A statement comes from South America that a singular property of the tomato leaves has been discovered byji fruit grower having cut down some tomato vines, he used thern as a mulch around his peach trees, lie soon discovered that the curculn, which was destroying his fruit, had abandoned the trees surrounded by the tomato "incs, which proved a perfect protection not only against the curculio, but against other noxious insects. lie found also, by steeping in water some fresh leaves of the tour, a to and sprinkling the infusion upon other plants, the innumerable inseets which cover tliem were driven away. Some gardeners have tried the remedy, some by accident and some by intention, and their success was remarkable. One gentleman bad his apple trees ravaged l>y the curculio until last year, when lie secured a spl?ndid crop, lie knows no cause for his exemption from the cureulio, except the tomato plants that were grown for the first time among hi? trees. Noxious Weeds. In some of the Northern States of the Republic, a law, for the suppression of noxious weeds, has recently been enacted and, we hope, will he rigidly enforced Owners of real e tatc are compelled to destroy all such growth on their lands and adjoining roadsidc3. Railroads and canals arc not exempt from these requirements, neither is the unknown owner of vacant lands.
