has about, eight room?, and w?rc living

the arrival of the ship. They had eome
from different sections, ond were entire
strangers to the city and each other.
When asked what county she came
from, she said that she did not know.
After some consideration however, she
said she believed they called it "Burcounty."
Being asked whether she
came from above or below Columbia,
she said she did not know where Co
lutubia was, She lived on Mr, Orval
Bird's place. It was not far from the
railroad She didn't live near any town
in particular. Had come on the train
Had b-'on coming two days and nights.
Knew wheresho lived was in Carolina.
ILd her husband and children with her.
Had sold everything before leaving
liomc. Had come here because they
hud gotten word that the .-hip that was
to cirry them to Liberia was here.?
Didu't know who they had gotten word
from. Wanted to go to Liberia because
it was the will of God that His people
should go. Kxp"Cted God to take care
of them until they did go.
This is a lair specimen <>l the general
answer* obtainc 1 from questioning: others.
Some of the woiu-n were cookintr
in the yard, while others, with their
children, sat in the piazza sunning
themselves. The men had all gone out.
Going down Line street, at the corner
of Line and Ash, a number of country
colored men were found stnnJiog in
front of a small frame house. On the
pavement sat about a dozen women, while
through the open door could he se-n
piles of baggage inside the house with
children ad infinitum. This puty con
tained about 1U0 men, women and children,
from Lancaster county, who had
come down that morning. Thoy were
in precisely the same predicament as the
others, and had their cTc-its hauled to
the house temporarily, ami now stood
about waiting for something to turn up.
They seemed comfortably dressed, and j
to possess considerable intelligence, but
were entirely without leadership or
[tinns for the future, having come down
(villi the expectation of going itnmcdiI'ely
on board the ship. They had eviicntly
no idea of what to do in the twisting
emergency. A cr.iwd of sympathizing
city colored people surrounded
[hem. some inveighing against the Eiberian
Exodus Association, and some
sondoling with the strangers on their
unfortunate position.
After a while, George Curtis, the
secretary and leader of the Exodus Association
appeared, and ns soon as it
oecame known who he was the crowd
fathered around him. His Grst exhortation
was that the emigrants keep to
themselves and have nothing to do witli
iny strangers, to avoid being fleeced.
The X w* awl Courier reporter approached
him just then, and asked on
rfhouithc responsibility rested for bringug
these people into this condition.
lie replied that ho didn't know as
,ct. That there w.is a conflict of vera:ity
between Middleton Ingrain, of Lantaster,
and one of the directors, the forncr
asserting that the litter bad writ
en to him, instructing him to come
Jown and bring his people, and the later
denying it. lid (George Curtis)
ntended, however, silting the matter
horoughlv, he said.
The next question was, ' What do you'
propose to do with theui ?" i'
lie answered that he didn't know.
[Je was trying to make arrangements for
hem. He then drew tiio male adults |
ntc line, and took their names, inform- I
ng them that he had engaged rooms
"or them that would hold six each, at '
.wo dollars p-r month.
' Good God !" said one of the men,
'you u'u't going to keep us here a
imntli, are you?"
' Yes," was the reply, "you may have
:o stay here a month, but we are trying
:o get work for you in the phosphate I
work-. Mr. Porter will leave in a few i
lays to select a ship. We have money
mough in the First National Hank to
pay the first instalment on one."
The emigrants set mod be'ter satisfied,
m 1 went off with the Libenun'scerefnry
to look at tlieir quarters on sotno of
llie sid" Streets.
A ea!l and inquiry at the office of the
L. K. A. elieited the response that the
people who came here did so entirely
Liu their own resp oisibiiity, and without
the knowledge, conseut or invitation
r?f the Association. When asked to
explain why it was that p.-jple came,
apparently moved by the same impulse,
fiooi parts as far apart as Lancaster and
liurke county. Georgia, they could give
no explanation beyond a surmise that a
report had gotten around in the country.
