A large somber of our people, who. '

a consciousness of the fact that genqjuc

which, encouraged by a stiff breeze t?ui ,

and were making rapid headway upon the

was .intense, and the excitement was great. .
The Ire communicated in quick succession ,
to the dry goods stores of Messrs. Rofcf r
M.'Kennedy and ,Tos. 8. Olond, and to
thaJrug store of Dr. F. L. Zemp, on the
south, while the cinders lodged thick and .

salting them on fire in many places and
reaniring the almost endeavors of the

that the building* which had fairly
caoght could not possibly be rescued, and
a Waited effort was put forth to prevent
the further spread of the conflagration
and to remove the goods from the burning
stores.
The Phcenut Hook and Ladder Company
planted their ladders npow the stores
of Ifissra. J. k T. I. Jones, J. W. MoCurrj,
and. W. C. Gerald St Co., and by means
of their buckets rendered tho most valuable
assistance. Nor were they, alone.
Kir<j Engine Company No. 2, composed
entirely of colored men \nd commanded
by Capt. David Junkios, stood manfully
to their posts, and maintained tho most
perfect organisation throughout, thus
showing the tremondens power of combination.

The brick walla of Dr. Zemp's afore

making a decisive stand on the south, and
to that end a few men, who saw the importance
of the position more readily than
oftem, planted themselves upon the store 1
of Kennedy A Boykin, only a few feet
removed from the immense sheets of fire,
and, by the aid of backets and wet blankets,
held the flames in check until a?sistance

The Course op Cotton.?The New ^

not come quite up to the current estimates
early in the week ; they were certaiuly below
the average of snch estimates, which
could not have been much, if any, below
i 225,000 bales, some being as high as

the South seem to account for the enrj
rent large receipts from causes that do not

HtUNLY KNUWN MEDICINE
THAT AFTHE 3AM3 TIME
urges, Purifies and Strengthens the
ayscem.
Dk. Terr's Piuj are composed of many lngredlit*.
Prominent among them are Saraapartlla; and
"ilil Cherry, no united aa to act together; the one,
trough Its admixture with other substances, pnrylug
and dtirglug; while the other la strengthentg
the system. Thus these Pills are at the same
me a tonic and a cathartic, & desideratum long
mght for by medical men, but never before dlscovred.
In other words, they do the work of two
tedlclncs and do It much better than any two we
now of, for they remove nothing from the system
ut impurities, so that while they pnrge they also
ireugthen and hence they cause no debility and
re followed by no reaction.
Dr. Tcrfs Pii.ls have a wonderful lnflacuce on the
icod. They not only purify without weakeuiug it,
nt they remove all noxious particles from the
ivle before it Is converted into fluid, and thus
lakes Impure blood an utter Impossibility. As there
no debltitatlou, so there la no nauaca or alckneaa
(tending the operation of this most excellent meIciue
which never straina or tortures the Ulgesve
organs, but causes them to work In a perfect
utural manner; hruce persons taking them do
ot become i?le and emaciated, but on the eontrar,
while all impurities are being removed, the comlunl
action or the .Maraaparllla ami WlKl Cherry
itrlilcs and invigorates the body, and a robust state
r health ts the reBUIr ot their united action. Price
> cents a box. Sold'by all dtu^gtsia. Depot 4e
