OMNIUM QATHERUMV
A Pacific organ of advanced agriculture, the
California Granger, is aesthetically adorned by J
a poet who detects the great peril of the associ ted
Grangers of the fields from the wily politicians
of the tow n and raises a warning voice
in the appended graphic'parable:
THE OLD GRANGER.
(A Parody.)
Near the tracks of a railroad newly laid,
A farmer leaned on his earth-worn spade,
Whil?tiis taxes were high and his crops but
slim,
The charge for freight played the deuce with
him;
So he growled a growl at the train's sharp din?
"I'll gather you in; I'll gather you in!
"I hare borne you long and here I swow
Tou railroads#to beat some way or how;
I will get up a law, by the great horned owl!
To eut down your profits and make you howl;
And but little, or nothing, I'll ship frem bin
Of hoarded corn, till I've gathered you in!
"We will rise in our Oranges, bold andTree,
And 'Down with freights!' shall our war cry be ;
Not a partisan crew, nor a party hack,
Shall help us to gain our birthright back ;
For the battle is ours, to lose or win?
We'll gather them in; we'll gather them in!" ,
Now a gaunt politician came that way,
O'erheard the old man's angry say ;
And he gave to his head a knowing screw,
And he cried to the Granger, "Count me, too!'?
With^'a thought to himself, replete with grin,
"I'll gather you in; I'll gather fou in !"
Then a twist of his eye, to seem scute,
"The fanner's tongue has too long been mnte,
I am just your nun, if it suits your mood,
So place me whe-e 1 can Jo most good;
If an office fit you will help ma to win,
We'll gather them in; we'll gather them in!"
Touching hand to hand, in a warm exchange,
They take a walk to the farmer's Orange,
Where the stranger speaks with rural air,
And sprinkles hayseed in his hair;
"Let railroads quail when our blows begin;
We'll gather them in ; we'll gather them in!"
80 they vote for him at the coming polls,
Those simple, rural, honest sonls ;
Never dreaming that they of the iron horse
Are voting, too, for the man, of course;
As on him alone their faith they pin,
To gather them in; to gather them in!
When election is over the rai'roads run
A score of (rains where they once had one;
While a ditch by the track is found to hold
A poor old Granger, stark and cold;
For the chap he'd helped to office win
Had gathered him in ; had gathered him in!
If yon arc about to leave a neighbor's
house,don't stand stammering and fumbling
and saying, "Well, I mu.st be going." When
you are ready, go at once.
A Western paper, describing an accident,
says : "Dr. Crawford was called, and, under
his prompt and skillful treatment the young
man died on Wednesday night."
It was an Irish Coroner who, when asked
how he accounted for an extraordinary mortality
in Limerick, replied sadly : " I cannot
tell. There are people dying this year that
have never died before."
Teacher?"What was done with Adam
and Kve after tho fall?" Pupil?"They
were driven odt." Teacher?"Why couldn't
they go back ?" Pupil?"Because the gates
were shut." Teacher?"Who guarded the
gates?" Pupil?"The Sheriff."
"India, my boy," said an Irish officer to
a friend on his arrival at Calcutta, "is the
finest climate under the sun; but a lot of
young fellows come out here, and they
drink and they eat, and they drink and they
die; and then tbey write home to their parents
a pack of lies, and say it is the climate
as has killed them."
Just such weather as this instils new life
and animation in a man, and is apt to make
hiui frolicsome. It stimulates him to racing,
jumping up and down, clapping his hands,
and feeling good generally. It so stimulated
one of our merchants on Friday evening,
and led him to invite his wife to catch him
before he got to the hack stoop. He started
on a smart run, and she bore down after
him at a creditable speed. He tore around
the corner very much in earnest, srepping on
a piece of ice, swung from his foothold, and
went careening across ten feet of froten
ground, and brought up with considerable
force against a pear tree?a new variety, we
believe. It was a genial spectacle to see tho
fond wife pounce on him, and hear the gleeful
shouts of victory as he struggled madly
g .to his feet and besought her "not to make a
