. " FOLLOW ME!
From (ho Charleston News.
.. <
The following beautiful and touchin f ii
were'read by the Kev. James W. Miles at the
close of a most iiupresssive discourse at Grace
Church on Sunday last. Many inquiries have
been made concerning the whereabouts and
authorship of the lines, aud to satisfy a very
general desire we reproduce them to-day.
The verses were publishei a year or two-ago
in the Southern Magazine at Baltimore, and are
from the pen of our gitteil townsman u. neroer*
fciass, Esq. ?
We may a?ld that great attention and interest
hare been excited by a series'of discourses now
in'course of being preached by the Rev. Mr.
Miles, at Grace Church.
FOLLOW ME !
Soul o'er life's sad ocean faring,
Whither drifts thy barque!
To what haven art thou steering.
Through the dark?
Torn by tempests, tossed by billows,
Wouldst thou anchor fast? %
Stay there on eternal pillows
At the last.
Far away t]ie hnppy islet,
Where the blessed be.
Lies quite past the utmost twilight
Of the sea.
But the waves are dark between thee
And that shelter warm;
Haven there is none to screen thee
From the s^irin.
Weary, wounded, wind-tost, stricken?
Hark! across the sea |
Comes a voice thy hopes to quicken.
"Follow Me!" ,
Whither, Lord ? the path is gloomy.
Dim the harbor light,
Cruel doubts and fears pursue we
Through the night.
"Follow Me in faith nnd meekness
Where My steps have led,
For My strength is in thy weakness
Perfected."
Shall I find Thee when I need Thee?
"Only look above: 9
1 will keep thee, shield thee, lead thee.
With My love."
Shall the rough waves stay their riot?
"Nay, I say not so.
Not in peace and calm nnd quiet
Shalt thou go:"Many
a time thy soul shall sicken
Yet, tho' faint thou be.
Hardly pressed and sorely stricken?
Follow Me!
I Myself will be thy pilot.
Till thou rest for aye.
Anchored at that Happy Islet
Far away.
'There of storm and strife and riot
Shall be blest surcease?
Life for Death?for long disquiet
Utter-peace!"
Pity the Poor Printer.?A writer
in Our Monthly has evidently been inside
a composing room, if he has not
" dug a living out of the case." He thus
sums the result of his experience?
"Working for forty editors and scores
of authors, every one of whom is as sensitive
as a sore thumb, and as lively and
interesting as a hornet, no wonder thai
printers die young, and only pachyder- i
dainatoiis grizzly, mulish, specimens get
their share of life.
Happy infantB, early blest!
Rest in pe tceful slumber.) rest;
Rescued from the thumps and jeers.
Which increase with growing yeara."
" The writer wishes he could offer hirn>
self as an .awful example of the perils
which environ the man who meddles with
cold?type, A thoroughly trained printer
should havtShad a step-mother, and
then a step-father, ami then heen bound
out to,a tanner, and then have married
a scolding wife, ami lived in a smoking
house, and had a family of bahies who
were afflicted with the colic. lie should J
have ariiled to all this discipline, a thorough
knowledge of science, the arts,
law, languages, theology, history and hi
ography. If, in addition, he has a vicious
looking countenance and an amiable
disposition, he may stand some chance
with those authors and editors; but the
probabilities are, after all, that they will
worry kiin to death."
(JKIEF OF T11B MODOC WOMEN.?A
correspondent at Fort Klamath says lie
was perfectly unprepared for the frantitstate
of grief which the Modoc Indian
women worked themselves into,
when it was announced that there was no
hope for Captain Jack and his companions.
They howled their weird death
song, and threw themselves on their
doomed friends, fawning them all over.
Even tin- little children seemed to catch
the infection, and thc-V cried and went
in the most finished style.
Jack appeared very much affected on
meeting his favorite squaw, Lizzie, and
the little papoose. His sister Marv was
even more affected, and worked herself
into a perfect paroxysm of grief. The
little girl even, appeared to apprehend
the situation, and sobbed bitterly. As
J irk irave her one last fond embrace, the
n~'
squaws returned to the stockade and the
murderers were left in their cells, with
no other companions than the gloomy
foreboding and anticipation of the mor row.
< )hl Sconehin met his family without
much visible emotion, hut his children
cried bitterly, and the squaws yelled
as if the wofllif was coming to an end.
The chief did not betray any outward
signs of agitation. lie kissed his little
sen repeatedly, and when just before retreat
they were taken away, he laid
down in the cell and rolled himself like a
ball in his blankets. ;
