The alarm of fire $undaj nighl originated
at a small house in the lower portion of the
town. A hole was burnt in the floor of the
building before the confayrertion was check- ]
ed. !

There wyae a large rattlesnake killed on <
a farm near town last week. Tt was fiiur
feet six inches long, eight inches in circumference,
and had eleven rattles. On the
same farm, a day or two afterwards, there '
were five snakes killed, of different varieties j
and sizes. In fact, there seems to be an 1
epidemic of these reptiles. *
A Homicide.?We learn that a fatal af- *
fray took place on the plantation of Mr. J. ,

McClair, on the west sitleoi waterce ivivci,
in this county, on the morning of the 28th
inst. It appears that the night preceding
there was s quarrel, Fouae of the parties being
under the influenco of liquor. This was (
resumed in the morning, and McRao Kirk- ]
land, ( white.) drew his pistol and fired at
