S Cloud, has returned from his trip to the North, made for the purpose of purchasing goods, lie is daily receiving the choicest selections from the best Dry Goods markets, of which further particulars will be given. Mr. Robert M. Kennedy also returned last week, and his stock of Dry Goods, large and well-selected as usual, is coming in everyday. The" mere menttnn of itiaTiui itisv he is receiving new goods, is a sufficient guaranty that they are of the best. Dr. J. A. Young also reached home from New York on Saturday last, and the appearance of things about his place of business shows that goods in his line aro coming in. Our merchants are actively preparing for a stirring campaign during the next few months, and their enterprise merits su^ess The stringency in the money market, causing - 1 ?v?wnlroiiO ItllQl cotton to Driiig a low pri?*>, p?ia<j<.vo ness; but all wc need is a little patience for u while. We have the staple which the world must obtain at any cost. Onr cotton innst, in a short time, bring a good price, and then the wheels of commerce will begin to run smoothly. Improvements.?We are glad to chronicle the fact that the Town Council have inaugurated a much needed work, that is laying the side-walk on DeKalb street with grave). This will make an elevated dry walk, and also protect the roots of the handsome trees which adorn the street, much to their advantage and the comfort of pedestrinns who are not sure ooted and cautions walkers. The Court.?The Court of (Icneral SosOninmnn ple-lu If (in t II. cook ft DIUUO auvi \ VIUUIWII M. (VMM, presiding, adjourned on Friday, the 2Cth ult. There was more business transacted ^ than was anticipated, in both the criminal and civil departments of the Court, and, altogether. the term was quite lively and interesting. A considerable number of those who wero obnoxious to the Tupper law were brought before^the Court by llrule to show cause;" and were discharged by the Judge upon payment of the costs of the rule, it appearing to his satisfation that the offenders acted in ignorance of the law, and had ceased Totaling liquors when they discovered that they were acting illegally. This course was just, as the provisions of the Tupper law have been a dead-letter in this community for years past, so that few lawyers ever thought, even if they knew, of its existence. To hold men criminally responsible for the infraction of a statute of which they knew nothing, when such infraction was practised oneulv. in the face of the officers of the law, r ^ ? ami under the sanction of licenses granted by the United States, and by the Town authorities, would not be consonant with justice. and was never contemplated by the law Tho following cases wore disposed of by the Court of Sessions: The State vt. We think that all of our citizens were pleased with the prompt, courteous and able manner in which Judge Cooke discharged his duties. The Baboock Set.p-Acivno Fire Ex" tingoisher.?That enterprising merchant, Mr. Robert M. Kenned)', has shown us'a draft of the above tiauiod Engine, which is the latest and most improved invention of the kind. It dispenses with complex machinery, experienced engineers, reservoirs, and steaui. Carbonic acid gas is the agent. In simplicity, promptness, efficiency, convenience and economy, it is superior to all oth or Engines. As an evidence of its worth, it is only necessary to state that the Fire Department of New York, perhaps the best in the world, having experimented satisfactorily with one, has ordered six others. Surely it is better for our town to have one efficient engine than half a dozen such as we now have. It is proposed to purchase, by private contribution if necessary, a No. 2 Babcoek Fire Extinguisher, the cost of which, we are informed, is $2,000 00, to be paid as follows: one fourth cash, and the balance in nine, twelve and fifteen months. The terms arc certainly easy. Will not our business men take the matter under consideration, and contribute liberally to an object of such vi tal importance to them ? The Jewish New Year.?This festival commenced at sunset ou the evening of the 22d ultimo, and was observed i I in a becoming manner by our Israclitish j friends of this place, as well as those through-' [ out the world, as a day set apart by IMvine authority for holy communion, penitence , and prayer. The Talmudists do not agree in fixing the time when the world bcgiui? * flume saying in the month A7son, or March, and others m ~7Tsri, or September. This j last has prevailed, and the year begins at | Tisri. The feast Rotch Havana, or New Year'? Day, is celebrated on the first two j days of Tisri, during which, all work is sua' pended. The 10th day of Tisri is the day of! Atonement, or Expiation, and is called Join Huchipur. This* is a day of fasting. The l east of Tents, Tabernacles or Booths, called i Succuth, in commemoration of the encampment in the wilderness when the Jews came | out of Egypt, commences on tho 15th day ! of Tisri, and continues nine days, four of which, the (first two and the last two,) are j obsesorved in the most solemn manner. The authority fur celebrating these occasions is found iu Leviticus, chapter XXI11. Sooner or later all will bo forced to ad mit, that manual labor cannot * compete in quality of work with machinery, and none i are so blind as not to notice the great re| ductiun in the price of un article, as soon as machinery is adapted to its manufacture.? : No line ofgoods have beeu move favorably I afl'ected by skillfully made machinery, than Doors, Sashes, Minds, Jcc.
