Nunnery, who resided about seven miles from town on tho (Jhesterfield road, was killed by a stroke of lightning while sitting under a tree in his yard with his wife and , others. Wo also learn that Mr. John T Nettles, who resides in the upper portion of the town, while standing in his yard, was considerably shocked in oonsequencepf a tree being struck near by, the forco of which Irnrakad down two colored women who were in close proximity to Mr. fettles. County Treasurer McQueen.?\Vc refer our readers to the proceedings of a public meeting endorsing the official conduct of this gentleman, and deprecating his removal. So far as wc have seen and observed, Mr. McQueen has been a faithful, efficient and popular officer. Consolidation.?The Carolina Life and the Southern Life Insurance Companies have consolidated under the Presidency of Thomas A. Nelson, Esq., of Memphis, Tenn. Their united assets are $2,500,000, and they have a large number of and a correspond"I? ingly large surplus. This combination forms one of the strongest Companies working South, and is an admirable arrangement for the holders in both concerns. ( Fioticufp.?Two colored youths who had 1 some misunderstanding at the corner of : Broad and DeKalb streets on Saturday last, endeavored to settle it botween themselves, 1 but wero interrupted by the timely arrival of a policeman. No arrests were made, as the parties gave leg-bail. Andes Insurance Co.wi-any.?Persons < holding claims against the above Company are notified to render them to the Comptroller General on or before the 10th of August, instant The notice is dated August the 1 fourth and consequently, allowed only six days for the rendition of claims. The Firemen's parade and contest for prises on Monday last was exciting and satisfactory. Tho arrangements were complete, and every body was delighted. Each Engine was weighed on the town scales and allowed one man for every hundred pounds weight of Engine. They went down the street, beyond a line drawn in front of Alderman | Oaks' store, and tho junior Company placed i at the line. TU question, "Are you retuli/?" ' being answered in the affirmative, the signal , to start was given, and according to the pro- 1 tliot* won In llm tnnrlrof n iliulanAn ^lAUIUIV vnvJ lau w vnu iiimihw^ ? m*?vhiivw | of about three hundred yards and played a i tolul ttrram of^uxitrr above the white space ] on the steeple which contains the palmetto i trees. The next youngest company was l placed at the line for their run, and the oth- ( ere successively, it being understood that the | Company making the ijuickcst time was entitled to the first prize and so on. Tho two judges at the line kept a correct time in minutes and seconds of the start, and the two at the terminus kept account of the time that each Engino played a solid stream of water above the line specified on the market steeple. After the contest was over, the judges compared timo notes, and the prizes were awarded in accordance with their decision. No. 2, President Jenkins, took the first prize, having made the time in 1 min. and 50 seconds; No. 1, President Mitchell second prize, timo, 2 minutes and 10 so oonds; No. 3, President John Reed, third prize, time, 2 minutes ?id 30 seconds. This Kngino was so unfortunate as to lose the linchpin from one of its wheels, the wheel came off*, and henco much time was lost for them. According to the rules, no allowance wits made for bad starts or accidents. There being no company to test against the Phoerniz ITook and Ladder Company, they wore allowed to draw for their prize, and when a little blindfolded boy drew the fourth prize for said Company, there was considerable merriment and laughter. After the contest, the Companies repaired to the Town Hall and received their prizes in tho order mentioned, presented by Messrs. J. K. Withcrspoon, J. A. Chcsnut and Walter F. Reed, with a few appropriate remarks. After the regular contest was over, the old Independent was turned over to DeKalb No. 1, with Mr. J. L. Rrasington as President. They were anxious to give the Phoenix boys a race, and the proposition was promptly accepted by the latter. The two companies repaired to the line and started even at a signal given by the Chief, W. F. Reed, as was the case with all of the other companies, and away they went. Tho Phoenix having put the bottom or largest ladder on top ready for uso, just Before they reached the croal. it fell off and they had to 6top, but propmptly caught up the ladder and ran with it, leaving the truck in the road. They lost in the run, but beat in tho race as a whole. After placing the ladder, they returned for their track. The colored companies then formed and went to the DeKalb Hotel and just as they were abput to call upon Chief W. F. Reed for a speech two colored boys commenced fighting, and so our friend Reed, escaped. The utmost good order prevailed,' and for the good management too much credit cannot be given to Messrs. Walter F. Reed, W. M. Billings and J. A. Chesnut, our efficient Board of Fire Masters, and all concerned. Wo trust tlio spirit and emciencv displayod by our Fire Department, composed chiefly of our colored citizens, will be properly appreciated by the owners of real estate whose interests are so largely dependent upon them for security. Caterpillar.?"We regret to learn that this destructive enemy to the crops has made its appearance on sevoral of the plantations on the Waterce, and the worst apprehensions arc felt in regard to the consequences of this visitation. The lateness of the crop and their early appearance combine to make the prospect rather gloomy to the river planters.
