Memorial f).w?This anniversary, dedi
rated to tljn^acred memory of our departed
herofes'/^as .celebrated <3h the 10th instant,
at the Quaker Burial Grouud, by the ladies
of tho Memorial Association, in the presence
of a large toufcVer of ladies and gentlemen.
The exercises were conducted by
Gem John J). Keouody, as Chant-man, at I
whose invitation a prayer was said by Key.:
Mr. Hay. The President, in fitting terms. !

ed a chaste, eloquent and appropriate ad- j

sentiment, and eminently worthy of the occasion.
(This address is now in type, and we shall
have thu pleasure of placing it before our
readers next week.]
The benediction was then" said by Rev.
B. F. D. Perry, after which, the ceremony
of decorating the soldiers' graves was affectionately
and tenderly performed by the
ladies.
The weather was beautiful and balmy, the
flowers bloomed sweetly, and bright-winged
choristers of the wild-wood warbled gentle
melodies, while fair women wreathed choice
garlands around theiowiy tombs of the sleeping
soldier by the silvery light of the pale
moon and the irolden glow of eventide.
Tho EplMepal Convention.
The paet w<Ni has been one of unusual'
interest and enjoyment lo the Episcopal portion
of our community. The Convention of

of a deeply interesting character. Indeed,
we have never known of any single occasion
upon which all the righto and ceremonies of
the Church were so generally observed.
Tfca Bishop of the diocese, with about
foortoen clergymen and sqpte laymen arri.
edon Tuesday night, the'Cth instant, as
Wednesday, the 7th, a day before the time
appointed for the meeting of the Convention
had been appointed, fur the consecration
of the now chareh. On the eveniog of their
arrival, the weather threatened to oppose a
serious hindrance to many who desired to
witness the imposing and rare ceremony.
The oioids that o.vered the heavens, appeared
to oar interested eyes, never blacker, and
the falling torrents that descended during
Tuesday evening, aod^we believe, the entire
night, never seemed more like that " melan
eholy rain" of which we have read. On tlio
day of the consecration, the rain abated sul
ficiently to allow a large congregation to re

that hour, a procession of fourteen clergymen
vested in stirpliees and stoles, headed by the
Bishop of the diocese in his episcopal robes,
proceeded from the residence of Gen. J. B.
Kershaw, the juuior warden of the parish.

At the south door of the elrtirch tlicy were
received by the wardens and vestrymen, and
the Bishop entered first, followed imuiedily
by tho Rev. President of the Standing.
Committee of the diooese, and the Rootor of
tho pansb, and began the pre&wibed service
| fo^ gpWjCcrAtiou of a church. The Bishop and
j Clergy having taken their places in the
chancel "the articles of donation and request',
were read by I*. L. H. Peas, Chairman of
the vestry nnd senior warden of the parish,
the sentence of consecration was rlad b)- the
Rev. B. F. Dunkin Perry, the Rector.
Morning Frayer was said by the Rev John
Johnson, for several years the beloved pasI
tor of Grace Church. The lessons were
read by the Rev. Mr. Capers. The Key.
Dr. Ellott said the Litany. The ante-communion
service was read by the Bishop, the
Rev. Mr. McCullough reading the Epistle.
The Bishop's very able and eloquent sermon
was preached from 1 Kings VIII ch\, 10th,
and llthA Verses* "And it came to pass>
when the priests were come out of holy
place, that the cloud filled the house of the
Lord, so that the priests could not stand to
minister because of the cloud, for the glory
of the Lord had filled the house of the Lord."
At the conclusion of the sermon, the Holy
.Uomtminibn Was celebrated.
On "Wednesday evening the Church was
again filled by a deeply attentive congrega-.
tion. Evening Prayer was said, and an exceedingly
iitteFeetiag eormou was preached
by the Rev. Br. Elliott of Charleston.
On Thursday morning an early service
was held at the Church, commencing at 61
o'clock. These early services |werc lreld during
the session of the Convention ; and the
full attendance upon each morning indicated
the interest which*was connected with tlieni.
At 10 o'clock the opening services of the
Convention commenced. The sermon was
preached by the Rev. 3Ir. Bellinger who
was called upon unexpectouly to perform
this duty in the absence of those appointed
at the previous Conventions. The business
of the convention on the first day was un
important to the pnblie, as routine business
generally is. The Convention consisted of
tw^nty.fbur'Olorgymen, and the reprcsenta- J
tives of about twenty-eight parishes.
Thursday night was devoted to the advancement
Society whose anniversary meet
ing was held in the Church.
On Friday morning after morning Prayers, J
the Bishop read his annual address. ITis
labors have*.been, abundant, He ban confirmed,
during the year, four hundred persons.
Between one and two hundred of
these wore oolnred people.
Three clergymen have died since the
lastmectiug of the Convention, the lie v.
Paul Trapicr, D. D.; the Rev. Stiles Mcllichauip,
and the Rev. P. Bruce Pans who was
known to this community from boyhood?
and whose early grave is with us. The
address in its review pf the roll of deaths
brought also to the notice of the Convention
the decease of three of the Bishops of the
Church : Bishop Upfold, of Indiana ; Bishop
V-iofk nrn nP AfnaaApTmspf fs and Rishnn I
Mcllvaine, of Ohio.
A suggestion of souie importance was
made in the address, in regard to the colored
congregations of the Church. The Bishop
discouraged any thing like an immediate
decision of, and hasty legislation upon so
grave a matter, and offored his suggestions
with the hope that they would be carefully
weighed with others that may bo presented,
lie thinks that the colored congregations
shsuld be formed into missionary jurisdiction,
over which a missionary bishop should be
I placed by the General Council of the Churchj
The address further recommended, and
j strongly, the creation, by the Convention, of
the office of "Registrar of the diocese"; the
observance by the families of'the weekly
offertory; and the hearty support of the
monthly Record by South Carolina Church
men.
Cpon these last three recommendations
a couiuiittco was appointed, which subsequently
presented a report recommending to
the Convention the adoption ofthesugges
tions whieh had been reforcd to them. Tho
special business of the Convention was the
consideration of the Revised Constitution
and Canons of the Church in this diocese
This Constitution was passed by a majority
of the Convention of 1S72, and required,
for its adoption, a two-thirds vote of this
Convention. The Constitution was adopted
with the oxccptionof one ofits clauses, re
striding to <OMniuittcui<u> parueuuu n-jmscuUitioii
in Conventions. Tim Canons wore
reached at too late a period in the session to
disposed' them, and the further discussion
of the subject was postponed until the next
Convention.
On Saturday afternoon the Convention
adjourned to meet in Charleston, at St. Paul's
Church, in May, 1871.
On Sunday morning, the Kov. William
Johnson was ordained priest. The services
were deeply interesting and imposing. The
Kev. John Johnson, the former Hector < (
the parish in thfe town, preached the sermon.
It was a great pleasure t<> hear his familiar
voice once more.
On Sunday afternoon a children's service
, was held. We over-heard a layman say as
we came out of Church, "T wish you clergy,
men would always preach to your congrega.
tinns as if they were children."
Ou Saturday night the Church was tilled,
crowded, packed, with a deeply interested
& . x
?
congregation. We have never seen a building
more entirely appropriated than Grace
Church was on Sunday night. The RevMr.
Pinckney of Grace Church. Charleston,
preached, and the Bishop administered the
Rite of Confirmation to fifteen persons. On
the next day he confirmed.in private two
others, making a class of seventeen.
Thus, as we said at the begining of this
article, w. at least, have never kuown of
any single occaisou upon which the Rites
and ceremonies of the Church were so
generally observed. Both Sacraments were
administered) a Church was consecrated)
priest was ordained ; and a class confirmed.
Our visitors hove* carried away the uost
dolightful impressions of the beauty of oar
town, and the hospitality of our people.
To the congregation of Grace (Jhurcii we
offer our hearty congratulations. Blessed
in the past with the zealous and godlike
guidance of tuosc who now sleep in hopo, ,
and whose names were never mentioned but j
with trembliug lips during the past week, j
may they continue to feel the effects of that
guidance, and be led to blessrags yet greater.

Suddenly without warning the bridge gave

the stream below. The scene which ensued '
was indescribably terrible as the strugling ^
