Governor Smith. <>t" Georgia, has invited the Governors interested to meet in Conven <un>!i/1? tlirt ffvont Tiroiefitcd Atlail- I I IUH IU CVUJIU\ * ?MV v?. tic and Great Western Canal of'Georgia, connecting the waters of the Mississippi*Tiver and the Atlantic ocean* The project is that the United .State.- Government eonstruet a canal frotn the southernmost point on the Tennessee river to the Coosa river in Alabama. Thence the Coosa is navigable down stream, connecting with all the waters of A.abamn and by the Tallapoosa, to Tallaha>see, Florida, thence to the bouudaryline pf Georgia, along the Warrior to the coal beds of north Alabama, and through the rich valliesnfthc Tombigbee and its tributaries up the Coosa to Koine. Ga., there connect with the Oustoula, Ga.. then the Etowah, cross the Chattahoochee at Columbus, thence, to the Ocmulgee. and so on to the sea. It is a gigantic project, and opens up a world of speculation as to the rich benefits to flow from this great system of inland navigation eloquently set forth in the speech of Gen. PuHosc of Georgia, iti Congress last session. The cost is estimated at from S20.000.000 to S40.000.000, ami will briug at least that amount to the South for disbursement, and as*we have no hope of getting the government back to the minuium of revenue and expenditure, we are in favor of the enter, prise as one means of "getting our money back." If it bo necessary to preserve our consistency, wo may call this a great "inland sea," as Mr. Calhoun ealled the Mississippi river, and thus take it out of the category <<f internal improvements. <?eu. LaFayette MeLai|a>Too Ooad To Be Trne. In commou with his many frieuds and comrades in this vicinity, we heartily congratulate our old Division commander on the well merited appointment mentioned below : The Aug usta Chruni>'lc ami Smti'nelsays: J "The report is published that the President has already appointed, or will appoint in a few days, General LaFayctte MoLaws United States Marsha) for the distrret of Georgia. We most sincerely hope that the report will prove correct, convinced, as we are, that no appointment can be made which will prove more satisfactory to the people of the State. In the tirst place, the appointee was a gallant soldier in the Confederate armv. and in the - * ? .1. second place, lie nas oeoii aim is a nuuucu and pronounced Democrat, two qualification* t?ot usually possessed by Federal officials. His political sentiments are well kuown to the President, and hie appointment, if he obtains it. will be due solely to his merits and personal relations existing between himself and the President. If we recollect aright, the Confederate General and the L'nion leader were classmates at the military academy of West Point, and tfie intimacy and friendship which commenced in the school room was continued through their subsequent life in the regular army, and was strongcnongh to survive a conflict iu which they espoused different sides. The appointment has in it no political significance whatever. It is simply, a recognition of former ties and associations. The Bloody Work in LolIsana.?Tho ; particulars of this affair come in slowly and unintelligibly. All that is certainly known is that the radicals, mostly negroes, assailed and capt tired the Court House at Colfax, the capital of 0rant county, and turned out the officials in po-vssion. Having done this they p. receded to fortify i themselves and to drive out the citizens op- , posed to them. This was dune under the authority atid conduct of the person whom j they claimed to be the sheriff elect. The I conservatives obtained re inforcements, and under tRe load of their sheriff. approached ' the Court House and being fired upon, pro- j ceaded to fire the building then g: rrispnedby , 400 men. and as the garrison left the build- i ? iug they were tired upon and from >') to 100 ( of thcui were killed. W.thoutexception they sceui delighted with all they see, but they do not know, as you and 1 do, that one of the greatest advantages which this immediate section of country possesses is its remarkable healthfulness. Pulmonary diseases?as inheritances? are utterly unknown here. You and I know many cases of invalids from Scotland, Ireland and the northern States, who came here early in life fleeing from pulmonary diseases and who expected to die from it, who have lived to be aged people. We know the families of such people now here in the third and fburth generation in which there is not the slightest tendency to consumption, while in t.linir nld n.-tt.ivn land ennsumntion has coil stantly claimed its many victims of the same stock?but great as is the boon to be exempt from this insidious foe, it is not all. It is a well recognized fact that in this pine and sand region not only are we exempt^ from pulmonary and malarial disease, but that tliose three terrible scourges, diptheria, mencngitis and typhoid fever, as epidemics, are imiknown?indeed, of the two first I never saw a case?though a few isolated cases of the first have been known. I have never heard of a case of the second in this section What an inducement to immigrants, we can add to our material wealth which invites their search, when we insure theui health in the pursuit and from all a WELCOME. Public Meeting[From the Lancaster Ledger.] lit accordance with previous notice a meet ing of friends of the ptoposed railroad from Chester to Cheraw via Lancaster Court lluu*e, was lield at this place on Tuesday, 15th instant, for the purpose of Lying before the people of this county the plans of the corporators and openiug books for subscriptions. l)r.
