shadow has in rarity clouded his day, and

his tearful pro%st. It is a very
pleasing sketch, and will h dd to the Jt) lit
tio? of this promising young artist. Thomas
Horan presents five masterly delineations of
the Yellowstone Region, one of which,
'Tower Creek," a fall page cutting by Linton,
is a most superb specimen. The
'Death Warrant of Marry Stuart" is a truly
royal subject, royally treated; and for texture
and detail, is noticeable even in The
Almnk "A CaUkill, Urook" Dy wnittreuge,
will carry of the palm with very many : a
[tool, surroudcd by forost trees, in which the
beautiful white bireh is conspicuous; the
wlitude heightened, not broken, by a pair of
kingfishers, one perched upon a leafless
branch, the other skimming the surface, and
moat enchanting vistas of dim forest distances
form a picture worthy of the reputation
of one of America's foremost painters.
Such a spirited sketch as a "A Bare Chance,"
by W. M. Cary, in which one of our
frontiersmen, on his gallant mustang, is
brought suddenly to cloee quarters with a
nonstrous gristly, deserves more than a passng
notice, but bo do the others, and space is
imited. There is a perfet gem of landscape

Iccording to our latest news the preaching
f the ex-priest is being attended with great
uccess. The old power, which in days
one by was so effectively revealed in Notre
)ame, still remains; and Geneva seems to
ave come to the conclusion that it has found
second and a greater Calvin. This is the
gc of free thought and free speech, and
father Hyacinthe has as good aright as any
ther man to take his ground and giro utternce
to his thoughts wherever he finds an
udience. It is not our opinion, however,
hat Hyacinthe is the man to make another
leformstioo. He is wanting in clearness of
ision and decision of character. He has
:one so far that duty ought to have compelled
lim to go further. He has broken with tho

bat moral courage which enabled Luther to
ake a position which commanded the respect

Electing the President by the People.
The Detroit Free Press hopes that the late
'residential election will be the last in which
he counting of the electoral vote of a State

louses of Congress. It is perhaps too late in
he session to expect any legislation on this
ubject by the present Congress, although
senator Morton's bill nuking the President

The Asheville (N. (!.) Expositor does not
liare in the impression that the ?South will
eoeive better treatment under the new
idministration of General Grant than heretoure,
and fears that "the South has not yet
teen the end of her humiliation and suffering.''
We hardly think there is a lower deep to that
lowest depth of humiliation witnessed in the
Louisiana wrong and usurpation, and behove,
with the old adage, that '-when things get to
their worst they are likely to mend." We
shall continue to hope for the best under all
circumstances, and advise our Southern
friends to keep up their spirits, to keep the
wheels of progress and industry in motion,
and, by a steady determination to labor for the
general good, command as Well as deserve

Increase of Salaries.
The salaries of Government officials, including
Congresnmen, have beeu increased.
The salaries are thus fixed: President of the
United States, $50,000; Chief Justice of the
Supreme Court, Vice President, Speaker of
the House and members of the Cabinet, $10,-<
000; Senators, Members and Delegates to
Congress, $6,500. The increased pay of
' members is to apply to the present Congress;
that of President and'other offieers comraooced
on the 4th of March instant.
The votes was taken amid great excitement.
Speaker Blaine insisted that the increase
should only apply hereafter in the case
of the Speaker.
