The Town Meetinq.?Our readers will P see by the published proceedings of the meeting held on Monday, we are likely to have a harmonious sad quiet election. As usual, c some radical agitators were trying to raise an issue, having in view the reduction of jj the charges for retailing and the payment of salaries, but the sober, industrious tax-payers c either Republican or Demoorat failed to see a the advantage of raising their own taxes to 8 pat more money into the pockets of retailers and people who preferred to live on the pub- e he, to working for a living, so the effort ti Ailed. So mote it be. g I Thb Election?Register.?It will be 0 perceived that the polls will be opened but at ' one place for registration and voting. No one [ can vote who fails to register, and we warn h oar citisens against being Idled into a false * security by the apparent absence of opposi- * tien. If tbe registration should show any Q chance for success, a ticket could easily be a formed and the party organised between a Saturday evening and Monday morning.? 1 Let no good citisen fail to register. s * Messrs. A. M. Kennedy and J. W. y McCurey are opening their Spring stocks, { of whieh we presume an announcement will a be made to their friends and customers in 1 due form. [ a The Retail License Law.?The Gen- * oral Statutes, page 378, section ft, prescribes 0 the requsites of a tavern to-wit: Two good t beds and bedding for guests, good and suffi- a cient diet for travelers, and stabling and j provender for four hones more than thoao of j, the proprietor. i GUotinn 19 ?mHi that "no licenaa shall t be granted for the rale of spiritoui liquors * in quantities less than one qoart, or which j hall authorise the drinking of such liquors a at the place where sold except to tavern keepers in the manner prescribed by this capter and not otherwise. No license, hj whomsoever granted, can protect any vender who violates these pro- 1 visions of the law. The penalty in each in- t stance is a fine of treble the amount of the ' price of the prescribed license and imprison- t went at the discretion of the Court. As peo- t pie gsoerally seem to be ignorant of the ex. " istenee of this law and out attention having ? been drawn to the subject, we give our read- ? era the shove information. It way save ' some of them much trouble. ? a The Aldink for April will be received { with enthusiasm and delight by every person of laate who has a grain of appreciation for the beautiful or a spark of pride in the pro- * grew of American Art. Being the lateat, j it is, of course, the finest of all the fine issues t of all this wonderful press, and in this con- 1 atant improvement may be noted the secret t of the greut success which this American 1 Art Journal has achieved, where, hitherto, ] so many beginnings have invariably counted just so many failures. The publishers 1 demonstrate, not only the amplest resources, 1 . <tatarminslinn to uae these resources to 1 the utmost, and this enlightened liberality < ia their busineM can hare only the one result ?a hold upor< the popnhr faith that will be to them a tower of strength for all time to eome. The second of the child sketches, by John Pfevi*) aoown^d m the <j?*rti>rly tinted plates for this year, appeal* in this issne. It represents a theft of a slice of bread and batter, by a roving car, from a youngster who was seated in the open doorway to eujoy the balmy morning air. A shadow has in rarity clouded his day, and the fast-falling drops of an April shower acrotnpany his tearful pro%st. It is a very pleasing sketch, and will h dd to the Jt) lit tio? of this promising young artist. Thomas Horan presents five masterly delineations of the Yellowstone Region, one of which, 'Tower Creek," a fall page cutting by Linton, is a most superb specimen. The 'Death Warrant of Marry Stuart" is a truly royal subject, royally treated; and for texture and detail, is noticeable even in The Almnk "A CaUkill, Urook" Dy wnittreuge, will carry of the palm with very many : a [tool, surroudcd by forost trees, in which the beautiful white bireh is conspicuous; the wlitude heightened, not broken, by a pair of kingfishers, one perched upon a leafless branch, the other skimming the surface, and moat enchanting vistas of dim forest distances form a picture worthy of the reputation of one of America's foremost painters. Such a spirited sketch as a "A Bare Chance," by W. M. Cary, in which one of our frontiersmen, on his gallant mustang, is brought suddenly to cloee quarters with a nonstrous gristly, deserves more than a passng notice, but bo do the others, and space is imited. There is a perfet gem of landscape >y Wiiuperis, the great rival of Birket Foeer. "A Deserted Church," "Spring Flowire," and "0 Pray my Child," ane zquisite wire picture of the German school, oomplete he list of attractions which are scattered with uch a genoroua hand among fhe patrons of his elegant journal. The literary contents if the April Aldink display the usual ezcelsellence and variety. Good Fishing in California.?What are the people of North Carolina, South Jarolir.a Georgia and Florida for the fish in the old-bearing State, when they have full storeouaes and comfortable homes ? The last an only be had with the aid of a Boor, Saab nd Blind Factory, and Builders' Emporium, uch as is now in most successful operation Father Hyacintue in Giniva.?Fathr Hyacinths, in obedience to the call of certiu disaffected Catholics in Geneva, has one to preach his new Gospel in that city. Iccording to our latest news the preaching f the ex-priest is being attended with great uccess. The old power, which in days one by was so effectively revealed in Notre )ame, still remains; and Geneva seems to ave come to the conclusion that it has found second and a greater Calvin. This is the gc of free thought and free speech, and father Hyacinthe has as good aright as any ther man to take his ground and giro utternce to his thoughts wherever he finds an udience. It is not our opinion, however, hat Hyacinthe is the man to make another leformstioo. He is wanting in clearness of ision and decision of character. He has :one so far that duty ought to have compelled lim to go further. He has broken with tho toman Catholic Church quite as effectually s ever Luther did, but he if wanting in bat moral courage which enabled Luther to ake a position which commanded the respect s well as the conscience of onehalf the world, lyacinthe is no longer a Catholic and he is iot yet a Protestant, in the religions sense f the word. It remains to he seen whetner he eloquent father will ba able to build up new sect, whether he will vault over openly nto the ranks of Protestantism or whether it will fall back and penitently take his tumble place in the Church of bis fathers, or the present his position is abnormal, and he ground he has taken ia so equivocal that re cannot say we have any great hopes of final aucceaa,*at least in his present line, t is a new experiment, however, and we can fford to await results.?X. Y. Herald. Electing the President by the People. The Detroit Free Press hopes that the late 'residential election will be the last in which he counting of the electoral vote of a State riTl depend upon the current action of both louses of Congress. It is perhaps too late in he session to expect any legislation on this ubject by the present Congress, although senator Morton's bill nuking the President lective by a direct vote js now before it; but t is the almost universal desire of the people, j) expressed through the press, that some iction shall he immediately taken in the >remises.?Ex. The Asheville (N. (!.) Expositor does not liare in the impression that the ?South will eoeive better treatment under the new idministration of General Grant than heretoure, and fears that "the South has not yet teen the end of her humiliation and suffering.'' We hardly think there is a lower deep to that lowest depth of humiliation witnessed in the Louisiana wrong and usurpation, and behove, with the old adage, that '-when things get to their worst they are likely to mend." We shall continue to hope for the best under all circumstances, and advise our Southern friends to keep up their spirits, to keep the wheels of progress and industry in motion, and, by a steady determination to labor for the general good, command as Well as deserve dUCueSA-^V. y Uetvty Increase of Salaries. Address 1-11 0. S. DBTWILER, Prts't P. 0. Box M6, Atista, Oa. A Disease with a Thoaaaad Symp( terns. Dyspepsia is the most perplexing of all humaa ailments. Its symtoms are almost infinate in their variety, and the forlorn and despondent victims of the disease often fancy themselves the prey, in turn, of every known malady. This is due, in part, to the close sympathy which exists between the stomach and the brain, and in part also to the fact that any disturbance of the digestive function necessarily disorders the liver, the bowels and the nervous system, and ^ffects, 1. IV. 1# it. VI J A i IV nuiuc CAiCIII, IUC VI lUv VIVUUi A medicine that, like Hostetter's Bitters, not only tones the stomach, but at the same time controls th? liver, produces a regnter habit of body, braces the nerves, purifies the fluids and "ministers to a mind diseased," is therefore the true and enly specific for ehronic indigestion. Such is the operation of this famous vegetable restorative. It not only cures dyspepsia, but also all concomitants and consequences Moreover, it is invaluable as a preventive of indigestion. No one who chooses to take half a wineglassful of this agreeable appetiser and stomachic habitually three times a day will ever be troubled with oppression after eating, nausea, sour eructation, or any other indications of a want of vigor in the digestive and assimilating organs. The debility and languor superinduced by hot weather, are immediately and permanently relieved by the Bitters, and persons who are constitutionally inclined to look upvn life "as through a glass, darkly," will be apt to take a brighter and more hopeful view of the situation under the genial influence of this wholenome medicinal stimulant.
