We have had our attention called to the
eseeoifinglv bitter partisan spirit character
iziug those portions of this school book relating
to what he terms " The (ireat RebellionIt
is important that Southern pco
pie should examine carefully alf books placed
iu tb" hands of their children, if they would
ml have them trained up to despise and
desecrate the memories of their fathers. Let
them at least be allowed to judge us impartially,
and after thwy .shall have attained a
maturity of mind that fits them for the task
if (ben, they deem us rebels and traitors,
our contempt will be mutual.
There is no excuse for those who become
the accomplices of those who write and circulate
these treacherous books, prepared to
poison the minds of our childreu against us,
and to create the verdict of posterity by
corrupting the youth of the country by the
perversion of facts, the use of degrading terms
and the expression of prejudiced and malignant
opinions of men, measures and motives,
calculated and intended to mislead the untutored
mind of children. We have in the
University Series, the best school books
ever published in this country, and wholly
free from objection on sectional grounds.
Let our people insist upon the use of such
books only as give the South fair play, and
patronize no School or institution of learn,

The Bankrupt Law.?J. J. Fleming,
Ksq , Attorney at Law, announces in an advertisemcftt
the following useful information
:
Having thoroughly investigated the present
Bankrupt laws of the United States now
in force. I am prepared promptly and on
reasonable terms, to attend to this Draneh of
practice. The following information can be
relied on :.
Under .the Act of 18G7 and the amendments
approved June 10,1872, the Bankrupt
when discharged is allowed to retain two
thousand dollars worth of property, to-wit:
Him thnnannrl dolltirs worth of bis real es
tatc and one thousand dollars of his personally.
and this, unlike the precarious and restricted
benefit of tho Homestead, becomes
his absolute estate, to dispose of as he chooses,
cither by sale, gift, devise, or otherwise ; and
with this estate he can commence life afresh,
all his debts effectually and finally wiped
out, and he and his family free from embarrassment
and annoyance.
The last Amendments insure the extinguishment
of all debts contracted prior to
lau. *1.18C9, and require payment by the
Assignee of only 50 per cent, of the individual
(not security) debts of the bankrupt
contracted since Jan. 1, 18G9?if assets will
"not cover those of same class prior to that
date.
Look Oi*t! Beware tiie Bar!?The
Sumter Xevra says :
It is reported that Judge T. II. Cooke, of
the Eighth Judicial Circuit, is closing up
all the bar-rooms in Anderson, Oconee and
Urecnville Counties, which do not conform
to what is known as the Tupper law. This
is a law which has remained on the statute
books of the State fur many years, but lias
been practically u dead letter, for it was
* never executed. It provides that no one
shall keep a bar except he has a certain
number of beds and accommodations for
> horses?in short, unless he keops an inn.
Judge Cooke, it issaid. ignores license issued
by town or city corporation, and holds each
vender to an account under the Tupper law.
Levi F. Etta me, Esq.?The death of this
worthy and respected citizen of Clarendon is
announced in the Sumter papers. "He
was the friend of the poor, and their trusted
counsellor." gays the Xncs, and the Watchman
adds : " His death was calm and peaceful.
under the restraining grace of his Lord
and Master, whom he loved and served."
A Lyceum.?Suuitcr boasts a Lyceum

an enlightened community, that understands
the value of intellectual and asthctic culture.

speaks well fur the place, shat it should be

ni rather than lior husband, we must take
tho side of the Reverend Professor, because
the story is so natural. It carries
with it an air of probability that is indescribable.
Unless she was different from
the good dames of these days, we know she
was much given to " putting things to
rights," and especially her husband's things;
and we know she was for putting those
dead frogs right out of the room. What
more natural then, tliau that she should see
them twitching, (all admit that they did
twitch,) and in the suddenness of her sur.
prise, athat she should have screamed loud
for the venerable philosopher, and thus called
his attention to the phenomenon. Of
course, that's the way he found it out. We
have no doubt too, that he, philosopher like,
disputed the existence of the fact with his
spouse, and would not believe the evidence
of his own senses, and never would have discovered
animal electricity, but for the determined
pcrtinaey of his good wife, who
was not to be put down in any such way by
anybody, much less her own Galvani.
Emotional JurieN Abroad,
Under this head, the New York Trfhvne

certainly not to be aespiscd. Where a lady is
not in the case, he is without a peer in
thorough-going idiocy. When the California
Phryne shook her blonde locks in his
face he took prompt leave of his senses.?
When poor Miss Harris shot Borroughs for
not continuing a flirtation which amused
her more than it did hiui, the jury-box was
damp with his tearful sympathy. And in
general, whatever may be his abstract senti|
ments on tho subject of murder, his heart
' always pels the better of his head when a
I woman is arraigned before him. But it may
be doubted whether in the case of male malefactors
the American juryman would be entitled
to the blue ribbon of fatuity in a fair
internaMQnal competition, 'flic judicial records
of every country in Kurope nrc Tint of
cases where juries have rushed blindly
through law and ovidence to avoid taking
the life of some miserablo being whose life
would not seem to anyone else worth saving.
The guillotine and the garotc have
had about as bad luck as the gallows in harvesting
the crop which belongs to them.
One or two recent French cases throw
some light upon this growing tendency of
juries to disregard their oaths rather than
; take blood-guiltiness upon their souls. It is
several years since that preposterous case
where a well-to-do farmer married in rapid
| succession three young girls in his neighborhood
for their little dowries, and poisoned
each of them to make room fur lffer successor.
By strict attention to this business he
accumulated in a few years some 66,0UU, but
eauieto ruin at last by unduly extending his
operations. Iu the ease of his last wife,
who was an orphan, lie yielded to the temptation
of murdering first her uncle aud brother,
so that when he had finished her he might
inherit from her the combined property of
J the family. This stroke of enterprise gave*
j rise to impertinent comment, and the thrifty
retail polygauiist was tried, his crimes clearly
proved, and the jury found extenuating
circumstances. He was so fond of money
and matrimony that they held it a pity to
put him to death for acts having their origin
; in these powerful passions. Hut within a
few weeks there have been several murder
trials in France, which might easily have
taken place in America, the crimes being as
causeless and the verdicts as incomprehensible
as those to which we are accustomed.
An old man named Lefebvre, a farmer of
Houplin, married his niece, who was also
' his housekeeper, to a farmer named Carpcnticr,
and gave the young couple his entire
property, and his own labor besides, on con

board and lodging. This injudicious gcncj
rosity resulted in the way which has been
j customary from the time of King hear to
| the present. Tltc nephew grew tired of the
company of his benefactor, and killed him
with a spade while they were at work togeth,
cr. There was a great deal of public feeling
about it, but when the trial came off the verdict
was imprisonment for life. Another
case has a still more familiar look, as it recalls
exactly the recent tragedies in Maryland and
in this State. Octavic I'arisot. a young girl
of the Cote-d'Or. was walking to vespers when
shetvas j jincd hy Kticnne (Jrasgot, a youth
of IS, who, after going w ith her some distance.
was seen by several witnesses, among
whom was her own mother, to seize her in
his arms. She struggled to free herself from
him, when he drew a revolver and shot her
through the head before the eyes of her distracted
mother. -Is the poor child fell, lie

who did not dare arrest him. lie was taken
' soon after, tried, the revolting facts wo have
mentioned were clearly proved, and the jury
found, by some process occult to the common
mind, extenuating circumstances which
saved him from the scaffold. The cnuso of
h;s fury was that Octavio had refused t<
give him a kiss, on the public -trect, on the
way to church,
i It is not probable that this was excuse
enough for such an atrocious murder even
among the nu>s I sentimental of jurors. .The
| most diligent reading of Pumas fiis, of Kcydcau
and Helot, would scarcely produce a
frame of conscience which would justify the
adoption of such dietetic measures by a
! slighted lovtr. It is the utiacknoledgcd re
volt against the killing of murderers by
society which is thus making the verdicts of
juries in capital cases as ridiculous in other
countries as thev are fast becoming in our
own. Ilerc, wc have lately seen a jury recoiling
from its own work after a year is
past. and the criminal only executed by the
firmness of tho Governor and the better portion
of the press. In France, a council of
officers can still shoot to death a wretched
Communist on tho plan of Satory, whenever
they choose. But the whole power of their
excellent judicial system can rarely avail to
obtain a sentence of death in the most
atrocious cases from a rural jury.

He wants his friends to resist the collection
