a fire was permitted to oommunirate from an
adjoining lot and destroyed sixty pannels of
the fencing enclosing the Cemetery. But
^ for the timely presence of some ladies with a
working party, the entire grounds would have
been swept over by the flames, and much
damage dons. Oar attentive Mayor placed a
party upon the spot and promptly repaired
the damages temporarily, bat it is necessary
that oar citisens should combine and erect a
new fence, if tbey would preserve this sacred
and beautiful spot from desecration.?

Millet.?We call attention to the article
on the cultivation of millet as a substitute

Robbery.?The office of tfce Town Treasurer,
John K. Witherepoon, Esq. was burglariously
entered one night last week, and
robbed of some two hundred dollars. The
thief entered by means of a key, and several
parties have been arrested aud are now undergoing
examination. We trust the guilty
party may be brought to justice.
Money should never be left in a public
office or in private places of business unless
under the safe-guard of the best burglar
proof safes or vaults.

. Thi New Steamer.?The new steamer
expected at oar last iasne, the Lilington,
Captain Bell, has made her first trip between
" this place and the Wilmington, Colombia &
Augusta Railroad. There is no doubt she
will carry a quantity of freight, and especially
from the country west of the Wateree.
She is expected to make regular trips, and
her owners say they will mako it to the advantage
of our merchants shipping North or
to Wilmington, to patronise this line.
Tei Confederate Home.?The Fifth
Annual Report of this noble charity, printed
at the Courier offioe, Charleston, 8. C., is
on our table?
During the past year there were resident
in the institution, 118 persons, being an increase
over the preceding year, of 16. Of
r this number, forty-five were permanent inmates,
and seventy-three resident pupils..
Only one death occurred during the year.

which were met by donations from the Gentlemen's
Auxiliary Association 91,710, and
annual subscriptions of the ladies 1328, and
the remainder from rents, scholarships and
pay pupils. The ladies of the Home offer

very best schools in the South, conducted by
ladies and gentlemen of the highest merit as
teachers, as well as a safe and comfortable
home.
The State Survivors' Association some time
I since recommended the establishment of a
scholarship at the Homo school, by each
District Association. We are pleased to be
informed that the Association of this District
was tho first to respond Though the
greater part of the money for the year has
already been raised and paid over, the Committee
has not yet received a single application

The Gen'l R. E. Lee Monument.?The
grand monument to the memory of Gen'l Lec
is now being constructed under the direction
and skill of Prof. Volentine. And in order

Association, of Lexington, Va., which is i
composed of such distinguished men as Gen'l
Pendleton, Gen. Terry, Hon. Wm. M'Laugh.

and sale of a perfect steel engraved portrait
of Gen'l Lee. The proceeds of its sale to be \
applied in furtherance of the object of this j
Association, namely: to the erection of a
monument to the memory of Gen'l R. E. Lee,
at the Washington and Lee University, Lex-* <
ington, Va. The portrait will be sold only
by subscription, through regular authorized
agents. Every subscriber for the portrait r
will receive a certificate signed by the Secre- v
tary and Chairman of the Loe Memorial As- u
sociation. We commend this portrait to the
public, and hope some good energetic man
will secure the agency* in this section in

corred in the street between Don Carlos and
Amos Doby, both colored, in which tho lat- c
ter was pretty severely hurt by receiving a n
blow on the head from a brick, and a stab in b
the back from a knife. Carlos has been
bound over to answer to the charge of assault
and battery with intent to kill.
A Fight.?On Tuesday last Patience ^
Reaves and Abigail Galliard, two colored
araazons, gave an exhibition of their pugilistic
skill. For a time, it is said the fight progressed
beautifully. Blows fell thick and ^
fast, and wool flew terribly. At the start, n
bets were offered at two to one on Patience. V

It soon became evident however, that she a
had been partaking too freely of stagger-water
to make a good fight, gnd the offers to
bet were withdrawn, when the police inter- c
fered and the battle ceased. Abigail claims
to be the best man.' <;
Patience was taken to the lock-up, wlicro v
she remained until night when the sober second
thought came to her relief. After
faithfully .promising to remain forever at q

mankind," she was released and went her I
way as sober as judge, and as happy as a 1
