Why as This Thus?
"\Yc refer now to tlie universal complaint
of the merchants of Camden in reference to
the light weights of the cottons which are
shipped to Charleston from here. A gen
tIonian informed us that on one lot of fourteen
bales, the difference in weight here
and there waso?< Jut ad redand1v:catj/ pounds
less in the latter place. Several others have
lost from six to ten pounds to tho bale, and
the deduction of two pounds which they
make here in buying, is not ' a drop in the
bucket." The Charleston factors say there
is no redress, there being in that city sworn
weighers, whose decision is linal. Thishowj
1 ?rtrti.;tw.. ;,,fn X)
ever, ucsci'ves uhu iwom
likely to cause serious damage to the trade
of Charleston, and those interested there
would do well to see into it. On the first
lot alluded to, the loss was not less than
twenty dollars, and it cannot be expected
that shippers will send their cotton to a
port where such tremendous losses arc sustained.
Cannot our City friends do something
to correct this great and constantly
increasing evil?
The State Elections.
The smoke and dust of the late conflict is
over with, and the result though not yet officially
announced, is well known. Moses
has carried the State by about 20.000 majority.
The whites had it in their power to
have elected Tomlinson, but their apathy
has caused the very man they did not want,
to be elected. T:i future, the only way in
which to accomplish anything is for the
whites to act as a unit, and threw their
strength solidly for what will be best for
them. Iji other words, to hold the balance
of power between any two contending fac\
tions which may spring up. It would have
been belter for thetn not to have voted at
all, than to have voteu asscatlc.ringly as they
did. We fear that the whites arc lacking
in political sagacity.
Let us not. however, despair. If flov.
Moses will do what he has promised, onr
people will have no cause for complaint.
Let us wait the developments of the early
future. If ho does what is right and just,
let us commend him as a faithful public ser.
vanl. If lie does .otherwise, let him receive,
as he will deserve, our censure and condeuition.
This is taking a philosophical view of the
natter, which. after all. is the very best that
can be taken.
