Hiram Ulysses.
Oh! Hiram Ulyssee, coxne home to your dad,
For the clock in the steeple strikes two,
San Domingo's gone up and the Dent's have
gone mad, .
And they swear it's all over with you;
Philadelphia convention can help you no
more,
The Methodist conference won't pray,
There's theaglleevnewsrfrnni the Ohio shore.
And itfaiort?Itytte'M flicked* to jp|y: 1 ;
Come home, come home, come home!
Sweet Hiram Ulysses, come home !
Don Hamilton, queer Fish is floundering out,
Of the muddy old treaty he made,
1I0 vnnr hnlf-willed FrederickcroeSDrancine I
about,
In Europe, with fearful parade,
Ben Butler is cocking hhtVpeabnyour spoons;
Tom Murphy lies out in the cold;
Your bands have stopped playing their custom-house
tunes,
And I fear me, sweet Hiram, you're "sold."
There's a horse in this circus for you and
Colfax:
'Tis the horse that you rede in the South,
The monkey standsready to letp on your back
And there'- whiskey to put in your mouth.
So*Hh*m, dtir Hiram, don't feel very bad,
*4 When you Bear that my tidings are true,
You are better at home with cigars and your
dad,
For the people are tired of you !
Greeley's Address tb tiie^ eople of His
Native State.
Coxcokd, N. H., August 12.?Horace dreeley
arrived at Concord this morning from Bradford,
at 10 o'clock, and took a special car for Lancaster,
accompanied by a party of fifty persons.?
Arriving at Tilton, a large crowd assembled; and
Greeley appeared on the platform of the car and
addressed ihem as lollows:
Fellowroitizensof a?y native State of New
Hampshire: A'f^w lords', "which'miist necessarily
be hasty, may be acceptable to some of you.
It has been said that our Americans are too fond
of going abroad to Europe. But I am sure he is
a poor Anmricaiyvto^doQBi^ot gpme.'back.a better
American thftn wh^nheVetrt-'-who does not
appreciate America when he returns.
Europe may be in many respects better than
America. Her population it more densely settled
t&a& -Amedca; heatgrts ab& s$n toots more
thorotighly developed, fncP hffr apple trfts, l
have noticed, have fewer dead limbs on them
than they have in New Jersey. But the American
who travels thro' Europe finds time to appreciate
freedom, which is the opportunity and hope
of American youth. I hope that the more people
who go abroad the more will come back to
appreciate the lakes the skies, the air, the fruitful,
soil, the gorgeous scenery and glories of our
own oountry, <.
I can assure you as one who haB traveled in
Europe, that 1 saw no such thing as the people
there gathering to discuss any subject of jpublic
importance, except of a religions character, and
I rejoice that I was born and have been permitted
to live here, where the people have everything
to say in the management of our institutions.-*
Ia the hope and belief that our country, free from
some entanglements and embarrassments, is destined
to become dear to all of us, It*ke art leave.
A general shaking of handafollojved the speoeb,
after which tlie train proceeded.
At Laconia an immense crowd was gathered.
Greeley's appearance was greeted with cheers
and music. On being introduced by Hon. ?.* A.
Hibbard, he spoke as follows:
Fellow citizens?during the half century that
I have been absent; and not a resident of the Slate
of New Hampshiae, 1 have frequented almost every
part of the State. The South and WeBt
wnere Ihave relatives and the North. Attracted
by the beauty and fame of the scenery, I have
ofteil wished, and now rejoice to find myBelf in
this great central part ofthe State which I have
bo long wished to visit. ' .** '
In other days, I have climbed to tke summit ef
the ffearaagy mmnttaina ^otaewhat of an effort
for ofie ofmj weight VrtfrfyfcaTs^and ftom lt I
saw a grander and bolder country, so full of
smileing fields, fruitful orchards, and houses
t ich as laborers in no other country live in, because
they cannot afford it.
These evidences of general thrift grow from i
sfeady industry, because what is won must be ]
worked for, and that is a fact to be deplored. I
never saw children who were better taught nor (
people who lived better than the people of New
Hampshire. ]
Attracted, as some of yop may be, to the more i
yielding soil of the WeA;^Or^gon, orCulifornia
or texas, in time to'come you will all agree with
me that there is no better place in. which to live ]
and di? than the gtpid old Slate of New 11 ampo
jmmittee, and a national salute was fired. After
a speech of welcome from Mr. Joseph W. Howe J
of New York, Mr. G*eel<y responded. Tho train
then proceeded to the Pennegiwas8*U House,
where he took the afternoon express for Lancaster.
