Repairs.?We aro informed by Mr. D..
Kennedy that a great many of our uieruita
are preparing to enlarge, re-arrange
1 alter their stores for fall trade. Many
i?nr business men have already made subulial
iuiproveuieiits in their buildings, and
are pleased to know that still others are
ut to do something for the good looks of
village.
'he Weather, for the past week, has
a very dry and hot. The rainy spell of
week did not cool the air to the extent
iid hoped, and now all thing*, human

heat.?Wc were informed some days
>y our friend, Mr. Allen McCaskili,
his wlieat crop was better this year
for many previous seasons, and we
the same report from many other
ry friends. The oats wero also quite
ctive. Therefore, we may hope that
lantcrs will have less corn to buy, and
etain a good per centagc of money at
which, under other circumstances,
have "to be sent off to procure these
ial articles for man and beast.
)esirable Undertaking.?By refern
the prospectus of the Kershaw Agiral
Society, it will be seen that a
tent is on foot to establish an Annual

our farmers will find greatcy to
dvantage, not merely in the light of a

irly finished the repairs on their school

i work with his usual energy, and we

The Presbyterian Church.?We have
I the pleasure of examining the new plutLi
and pulpit erected in this Church. The
mgs of the platform are of beautiful gothic
Us, done iu black walnut. The pulpit is

[gratifying to see these'evidences of vir
in the Churches. The above work is

Iatkree Cornet Band.?Our sluuiI
wore most agreeably interrupted ou

Be," very elegantly rendered by this enising
aitd talenteu corps of amateurs.
It progress since we heard them before
tost gratifying, and gives us good ground
pe that Camden is to be distinguished
i happy possessor of a first class band,
s are few associations of our young men
ile of yielding more pleasure to the
mtiity as well us the members, than one
s kind, and we trust our young friends |
Ipotsevcro until they have made their j
1 au institution, and of the best.
Fire? Burned.?We
that a near mil), just erected by our
aed friend Capt lili pear the
| Kershaw and Fairfield couuiies. i.j
Eolty of Ridge way was dcst.a yel by
j last Saturday night. There is no
Mo doubt that the fire was, the work
IMtidiary. A short time ago another
mill in that vicinity was broke into and the
stores so mutilated as to render them usel ?ss.
There seems to he a determination on the
part of some one in that neigh {jorhood to
prevent the people from having bread.
The wartcrmelon season secmes to hang
on like the "Kilkenny pats" arc said to have
done?with great tenacity. Although everyone
is surfeited with melons, still our country
frjends continue to place thorn in market,
in hopes of getting paying prices for their
produce. We. have met two individuals who
demanded extreme .prices for very inferior
articles, and seemed to have the opinion
that to a "town man's" pockety there is no
bottom.
Tiik New Truck.?We are glad to learn
that the Phoenix Hook and .Ladder Company,
recently organized here, -have perfected
arrangements with the Phoenix of Columbia
for the purchase of their truck and that
it will arrive here in a short time. Wc
would suggest that when the truck docs arrive
the whole fire departmet of Camden
turn out and escort the newjjompany and its
new apparatus from the depot into town.
Music to be furnished by the Waterce cornet
Band.
A New Version.?Our readers will remember
that we published, two weeks ago,
an account of the Ku-Kluxing of Harry
McRae, (colored,) by a party of fifteen or
twenty colored men, the nlledgcd cause of
the outrage being, that Harfy had bo-witched
a daughter of a colored man. Since then,
wo hava learned from reliable authority,
that the real reason for Harry's treatment
was because he was a Democrat. This gives
a new phase to the affair. Harry has indicted
two of his assailants (the onlv ones he
was able to recognize,) and the examination
comes off this morning before IT, S. Commissioner
Gaylc. Whatever of importance
occurs then, will be given to our readers in
these columns next week.
The Republican Nominating Convention.?The
Republican County Convention
for the purpose of nominating three
delegates to the State Nominating Convention
met at the Court House on last Saturday.
Cardoza presided. When this reporter
arrived, the various delegates from the
different precincts, seventy-two in number,
had retired to tho jury room for the purpose
of consulting as to proper names for nomination.
The choice of the meeting for Governor,
seemed to be divided between Judge Mel- '
ton and F.J. Moses, Jr. Alter remaining
in the jury room about an hour and a half,
the delegates made their appearance, when |
the Convention was permanently organized
by tho election of Walls as Secretary.
The following nauios were then announced
as candidates: Reuben Gaither, Steven Gary,
Allison Hough, Frank Carter, E. J.

The olection resulted in the choice of Al- ^
lison Hough, Reuben Gaither and Frank .
Carter.
There was an election for delegates to the
Congressional nominating Convention, which '
resulted 111 the choice of the same parties.
Though refusing to commit themselves, ,
wc think it probable the delegates elected i
will give their influence for Melton.
The meeting was more orderly than usual,
probably owing to the fact that there was
very littlo urtian whiskey afloat.
Fatf. of the Murderer.?We are informed
by a friend from Suuiter County .
that Shadraek Harris, the perpetrator of j'
the recent murder at 'Ridgeway, was appre- j
hended by our Town Police as a" suspicious \
character on Saturday the 20th inst. I) is- j
charged by them, he took the Sumter road, i
At Ben Wade's place ho entered the premisis
and helped himself to two water-melon?,
in prescneo of Mrs. Wado threatening her
with violence if she gave the alarm. Thence 1
he went to another house and asked for
bread, saying he was perishing. He made
a similar application at Mr. Rharnes. That

may investigate the subject.
Frist Bale of. Cotton.?The first bale
of new Cotton was brought to this market
yesterday by Mr. M. Barefield of Spring
Hill, Suiu'ter County, and wns bought by
our enterprising merchants Messes J. & T.

A Perilon* Season.
Olorious ami dclighilul as summer weather it*
its tropical heat is a severe trial to the vital powers.
Even the strongest are sometimes prostrated
by its effects. The common phrase applied to
this condition of the body is "general debility."
Now general debility arises from and includes a
variety of ailments. The liver is more or less
affected, the bowels are cither constipated or
too much relaxed, the stomach but hulfperforms
the work of digestion, the appetite is poor, and
the spirits depressed, This is what is called
general debility. It is a general disarrangement
of all the physical functions, and requires as a
yeuiedy, u medicine that will correct them all.
Hostetter's Stomach Bitters is specially adapted
to this purpose Its general operation is not
confined to a single Organ. If the liver is affected
it restores its tone. If the stomach is torpid
it regenerates it. If the nerves arc tremulous
and weak; it braces and reinforces them. If the
mind, which ever sympathises with tlie body, is
gloomy and despondent, it relieves the diflieulty,
and soori brings the whole mnchinism of the
body into harmony with the laws of health.
There is 110 civilized nation in the Western
Hemisphere, b: which the utility of Hosteller's
Stomach Bitters us a tonic, corrective nnd antibilious
renicdj' is not known nnd apreciatcd.?
Throughout the tropics, it is considered by both
the people und the profession, the standard specific.
While it is a medicine for all seasons nnd
all climates, it is specially suit ctl to the complaints
generated by hot weather, being the purest ami
best Yegctnblo stimulant in tlrt world.
Beware of the bitters made of acrid and dangerous
materials which unscrupulous parties are
endeavoring to foist upon t lit people. Their name
is legion, and the public has no gnnrant >c that
they are not poisonous. Adhere to the tjied
remedy, Hosteller's Bitters, sold only in gluss,
never in Kegs or barrels,

The Village Ciiurcii.?It should riot
look like a barn or a storehouse. It should
be a building, the very sight of which'
would cause devout feelings in the breast. A
well-carved cross should point to heaven;
massive paneled doors should impress the
visitor with the solemnity of the pluce iuto
which lie is entering; stained ghtss should
throw a mystic light athwart the aisle; pulpit
altar ceiling and galleries should be ornamental

that support the gallcrieH, and the balusters
that rail them in, should be of classic patterns.
Any congregation wishing such a church
should send their orders for finishing material
to Mr. P. P., Charleston. S. C,
Personal.?We were happy to meet our
friend, Col. P. C.Kemper, of Hampton Sidney
College, Va., formerly, the well-known
commander of the fur famed Kemper's Battery.
The Col. is on a visit to his family
canneetions at this place.
Truth and Poetry.?Milton puts into
the mouth of Lucifer, in "Paradise Lost,"
these memorable words?
to be weak j.s miserable.
Never was a truer sentence than this, supposed
to have been rung from the Arch-fiend
in his impotence and agony. Every victim
of nervous debility, or of that despairing languor
which is one of the accompaniments of
dyspepsia and biliousness can testify to the
misery of mind and body which they iuvolvc.
The motive power of the system is partially
paralyzed; the n.iud is, haunted bv apxieiy
and fear; and the sufferer is as incapable of
applying himself cucrjetically to any kind) of
business as if he were under the benumbing
influence of catalepsy. . This terrible:moutal
aud physical condition need not however be
endured for forty .eight hours by any human |
being. Plantation Bitters & an absolute',
