the cares and sorrows of life, while, the
faces of the young1 beam with delight,, and
their joyous shouts bespeak the bubbling

Perkins' on last Thursday evening. The
frlea originated v,il h a bevy of ladies, who. had
they canvassed the entire'catalogue of "\v ays
and means to make people happy, could not
have arrived at a belter conclusion. It was
a novel one, hut-so successful as to establish
it as a precedent for the future. Itsnpparcnt
simplicity made it appear as a very easy
matter, yet like all perfect machinery, to acquire
tliis simplicity, powers of organization
ayd combination were necessitated* It was
developed and carried out in a way that docs
ineffable credit to its originators and managers.
and as one who enjoyed to the utmost
their success, we hog to return in common
with the Congregation our sincere thanks,
and to the kind owner of the premises and
her accomplished daughter and cousin, were
we indebted in large measure for the enjoyjuent,
and at home fooling every one experienced.
At six o clock the gathering began,
and by seven there was collected an assemblage
of happy people whose delight was as
genuine as it was intense. On t he green grass

ing, sauutcring about and playing, the grayhaired
matron, the dignified old man, the
beautiful maiden, the sprightly youth and
the joyous child. Presses of all hues and
colors?ave variety and* diversity to the picture.
The cuujj d'oil on entering the grounds
embraced a uiiucrature Arcadia, where care
was unknown, and peace and joy reigned supreme.
Here was a group (juictly intcrchaugiug
views ou matters of interest whether
of church, .State or local import, there a coterie
of old friends, who from scarcity of locomotion
had not met for months; here wore
young ladies and their gallants indulging
in a ou'vt ( fc-u-(rfr} and ou all sides in and
around, by twos and threes, or in shoals,
were seen happy children, running, swinging,
playing games and having a good time
generally. And as if to grace the occasion
nature lent her smiles, and with cooling
breezes, relieved the heat of the waning sun.,
After aii htm or two of enjoyment the little
folks were summoned to a table which groaned
beneath its load of delicacies. Under the
direction of cho'SaMtath school teachers they
sang a beautiful little hymn, and every heart
re-echoed the swCet melody. At its conclusion,
our beloved pastor expressed in a
few felicitous remarks the joy which his heart
felt at the scene, and his profound satisfaction
at the harmony pervading the occasion,
and the exhibition of love trtid good will
evinced between the members of' his church
and indulged the hope-that as Presbyterians
they wonld take n pride in their church and
do all m their power to advance the cause of|
iho Redeemer, and promote the welfare of
this vine of his planting, and .then offered
up-a. touching heart felt prayer. Then began
the attack on creams, jollies, cakes, sweetmeats
and candies, in a truly Santa Clans
style, while at the same time from the boft'nf.ifi?l
snnnlv the old folks were served. As
:i fuurtc the goodly company adjourned to the
house wlicrc inspiring strains of music gave
a happy benediction to the occasion, and
after parting salutations of uittnal gtiod wHl
and satisfaction, tlic Company departed enthusiastic
over the entire success oij tie entertainment,
and pledged to have another at
spirit! opportune tinne. The whole scene inspired
us with llic'subHmc p>cm of tl?o Psalmists
:

for brethren to dwell together in unity. It
is -like the precious ointment upon the head,

of Zion : for these the Lord commanded the
blessing, even life evermore."

,His father was a native of this State, and
served as a soldier in tire Revolutionary war
of the United States, and was'living in this
District at the lime of Gales' 'defeat near
Camden.
The deceased was mhrVlod to Mary A.
G ask in, of Williamsburg District, of this'
State, October 4, 1810.
He served as a soldier under Capt. Capers
in Col. Henlnun's Reghncut, at Charleston,
S. 0., in the war of 1812.
lie was a farmer by occupation, and raised
a large family, and lived to bury his wife
and eight of children out of twelve. He
leaves one son, the Rev. J. E. Rodgors.
and three daughters, many friends and relatives,
to mourn his departure. 'Rat they
sorrow not as (ho*j who have no lmpc; JI c
had been a mc:j:her of the Antioeh Uaptist
Church of Christ. I'or more than twenty, years,
and died resigned to the will of Clod, in "the
hope of eternal life.
