W. corner of the towu cried "fire, fire," but did nut succeed in having the alarm bell rung. Several persons, however, hearing the cry, ran to the place and found that the field "of Maj. J;. W. R. Blair, which was covered with broum?traw, a particularly inflammable substance, was on fire and the wind blowing quite strongly, gave it the appearance of a large fire. Those present prevented it from communicating to the fence and it soou burnt itsglf out. Our local nearly ran his pedal extremities off and all for nothing. Another alarm was given on Wednesday morning at 9,45 o'clock and was caused by Ire at Mr. A. J. Frcitag's house which was soon extinguished by a few buckets of water Court In Session.?Judge Melton con yepe4 his Court on Monday last at 10 o'' clock. The jurors being prompt in then attentjaqcq, the juries were soon organized and the petit juries discharged until to-day when the Court of Common Pleas will con vene. Only three cases were given to th< Grand Jury, two for assault and battery one with intent to kill and one for Grant larceny. True bills were found in eael ease. The Grand Jury was then dischargee ? ! iVom further attendance upon this session, j No criminal.eases were tried, and we have heard of hut three civil eases ready for trial, two of which will not require the intervention of a jury. It is a matter of great pleasure to see such a state of peace and quiet reigning throughout the coinuiuuity, and we hope that it may continue. It is probable that the Judge will not be detained here longer than to-day, and will therefore have the much-needed opportunity of obtaining sonic rest before opening his Court in Columbia on the first Monday of May, next. . Cleansed, &c. ^c. &c.?Marly on Monday evening, about 7' o'clock, the drum and fife were put into operation. for the express and sole purpose of attracting a crowd for the benefit of Mr. Car.Jpza, who'had couic to give an accouiR of his stewardship. After a half hour's work a brilliant success resulted, and quite a crowd collected; the town hall was illuminated, and the Republican? took their scats. Frank Adamson, Representative of this county was i ?..ii..a il,? r>ltnir nnd introduced the ora vancu inv v......, ...? tors of tlic evening. Our reporter, being elsewhere engaged, did not arrive until near the close of Mr. Cardoza's speech, but jiulgi ing from what lie heard, the speech was mod! crate in tone and replete with good advice. J # , 1 , He advised the Republicans that they must elect to office only those men who were lion est and capable; that public men do more good when they act in such a manner as reflects ered,it upon their constituents, than I when they behave in a way calculated tc ' arouse the suspicions of men as to their honesty, and it is a reflection upon their constituents to put other than good men into office He said that the work of Legislators now was not so much to sceuro their rights tc the colored people, as that has been already effectually done, but to enact such laws as tc carry out the purposes of those laws alreadj passed. He referred to education as inpsi ! essential to them, and advised all, no mattci j how old, to learn to read and write, lie referred also to the possession of lands and ' other pvporfy by (lie colored men, and sta j tod that ibe f - inocrats, if they wished tc win their will, should pay them gooc j wage?. sell thciu lands at reasonabh n:to.-. 1 ui charged that as a rule, the Homo crats wl.iiId not do (his. though he admittci that there were exceptions. Ho road t< the audience portions of the game law pass : cd at the late session of the Legislature | which forbids, under penalty of flue and im prisonmcnt, the killing of any deer, wih ' turkey, duck, <kc., between the first day o January nnd the first day of September i ami of woodcock, doves, pheasants, par tridges, ike., between February fifteenth am I October fifteenth, in each year, and advisci \ bis hearers to report persons infringing tin j law, so that they might be fined, and tin I tnnroivlc f lir? srlionl fund. Ib I UlUt'CbUS tunuiu^ closed by reference to certain malicious re j j ports circulated by bis enemies, and state* that they came from those who were neve satisfied, no matter what was done, and tha it was foolish to pay any attention to suel idle rumors, or get huffed at what every be dy said. Mr. George volunteered to inflict aspcecl . upon the audicnco, who seemed very mucl . disposed to leave. lie said he appeared t discharge a duty which lie owed to his nr [' tive county?lie had been born and raise I here?an eloquent man had just add re: . scd them, but be was here toTstatc moi ; positively and emphatically, that there wer natives of this county who were fully a 1 competent as Mr. Cardoza?that they mm i stick by their own people and quit' carpet 1 baggers, and not bring men here l'roi f il abroad to elect to office in Kershaw county. Judge Melton was called upon, and said that he was surpiscd to be called upon, and merely rose to acknowledge the invitation? that it would not be becoming in him to do more thaa he had intended to do when he cauic there, i. r. to attend a meeting of the Republican party of this county, and hear a public servant, giye an account of his stewardship?that lie knew Mr. Cardoza had served tho county faithfully and discharged his duty as a Legislator and a Republican? that lie was a member of the Republican party?has no charges to make against any one?is indifferent who is to blame for the corruption existing in the party?the only thing is to know wlw is to blame that we may avoid those who bring disgrace upon ns?a large public debt had been contracted?docs not see how we are to pay it? why. by whom or how it was contracted, it was not for him to sny?as a Repuclican, he had linked his fortune1} with that party, as he had hitherto done his political, principles?that the wrongs, enormities, corruption, dishonesty, the use of the party to benefit individuals mutt be done away witji, or the party would go down?he does not seek promotion of individuals, nor care jvho arc to be the officers, lot them be whoever the party .select, let them be those who are not ashamed to look upon the light of day, and who bava honesty upon their brows?be referred to the Land Commission, and asked, where was the land, who had it? [A sepulchral voice, " none," ''nobody!"] The public schools, wl?crc has the money gone! where arc the schools? The Judge closed by reiterating his assertion that the party needed whitewashing internally, and would go down if it were not cleansed. Mr. E. Wall was then called up. lie stated, that he came here to live, not for office, and would make a few desultory remarks. Then in a regular set speech he proceeded to set forth the peculiar attractiveness of the Republican party, in the midst of which interesting occupation, we left him. At no time was the meeting enthustfd, and a great deal that was said fell very flat, more so than wc have ever before known. A criticism upon? the spec hes would serve no good purpose, as most of our readers can form opinions of their own, and those who cannot, would not be able to do so as to our criticism, and of the Republicans, no ono would believe what we said?so that we prefer nf?t perpetrating the infliction of a* lengthy discussion of the merits of the speeches. Judge Melton's adherence to the dominant party has heretofore been comparatively unknown to many persons here, but now, as a matter of course, the fact is no longer unknown. We learn that after our reporter left. Jno. A. Chosnut delivered a very^xcellcnt speech, which is said to have completely demolished Cardoza's arguments. This was told us by' a goou Republican, and therefore will uot-be t:iKen as our statement. Thus ends the report of the first gun of the campaign* which however, we regard as likely to meet no response from a hostile source.
