to all who witnessed tho fall, she
jumped up and ran into tho house and resumed
her work as though no'thing had happened.
The Chinese manufacture dwarfs by stunt
ing the growth of their children. A heavy
peculiar vase is placed over them, so as t<>
leave only their heads free. It is removed
at night, but replaced daily until the body
ceases to grow.
The more shrewd and crafty of the Grant
Republicans are studying how they may capture
the Cincinnati Convention, on the oth
of Juno, and turn it over to Philadelphia
and General Grant at a later day in the
month. The "little game" is to defeat a
nomination-, and resolve the meeting into
words, "reform-" resolutions, &c.
The pistol with which the imbecile youth,
O'Conuer was going to shoot the Queen, it
is uow understood, was an old weapon, purchased
of a pawn broker, and which hegave

The following is a correct statement of the cotton raised by Stevens & Cureton on If acres of
stubble land, which was mnnurcd with 400 pounds of Carolina Fertilizer. The following is the
mode of cultivation: it was thoroughly broken up 13 inches deep, and laid off in rows three and
n half feet wide, and the fertilizer applied in the drill, then bedded on it on the loth of May,
and planted the same day, but owing to the cool and dry weather, did not come up to a stand un|
til about the 1st of June First working it was run around with a half shovel and partially
trimmed out with a hoc. Second working it was run around with a 3 inch grub, 12 inches long
and the middles thrown out with a sweep 18 inches wide. One furrow to a row and thinned to a
stand with a hoe about 12 inches between the stocks, and afterwards it was ploughed every two
weeks with a sweep 18 inches wide, and hoed each time, until it was worked five times. The following
is a correct statement of the cotton picked:
1st picking, 254; 2d picking, 410; 8d picking, 413; estimated amount of unopened matured
bolls, 816; totul, 1,928. Respectfully submitted, STEVENS & CDRETON.
