Tales op a Traveler.?"John," of the
New York Sun, gives his experience in
canal travel investigation :
I called on a man to-day who fakes care
of the locks on the Erie canal. He says he
isn't a barber cither, lie told pic what fearful
gales they have on the canal; how he was
wrecked once, and all hands were saved by
wading ashore, but they came near getting
their feet wet. The boat lay in the trough
of the sea thirty-six days.
"How did they save her ?" said I.
"Why," said he, they bored a hole in the
bottom of the trough and let the water

out.
"Oh," I replied, and left hiui alone with
his conscience-. On my way thro' the State
I stopped at a sulphur spring, and I'll tell
you what they arc made of. I touk just one
swallow, and the taste convinced ine they
are old Indian burying grounds.
The government and insurgent troops in
Mexico are severely demolishing each other
if the telegrams from that country are to be
believed.

The following is a correct statement of the cotton raised by ifi/ vms \ fit ret on on 1J acres of
stubble land, which was manured with 100 pounds of Carolina Fertilizer. The following is the
mode of cultivation: it was thoroughly broken uj? 1" inches deep, and laid oil" in rows three and
a half feet wide, and the fertilizer applied in the drill, then bedded on it oil the 15th of May,
and planted the snmedny, but owing to the Cord and dry wother, did not come tip to a stand until
about the 1st of June First working it was run around with a half shovel and partially
trimmed out with a hoe. Second working it was run around with a "> inch grub. 12 inches long
and the middles thrown out with a sweep I* in<d;es wide. One luriow to a row an 1 thinned to a
stin 1 with a hoe about 12 incites between the slocks, mid afterwards it was ploughed every two
weeks with a sweep 18 inches wide, and Inte l each time, until it was worked live times. The following
