Rumors of War.
Our readers are doubtless aware that the
relations between the United States, and
Spain and Russia are anything but friendly,
and that certain preparations arc going on,
which indicate the possibility of a war between
this country and one or bath of those
above uanied.
The question naturally arises as to how
this country will be benefited by a war with

tive point to which the eyes of''Uncle Samuel!'are
looking in reference (o Spain, and
the large possessions of Russia to the-North
of the United States, known as Russian Amcrica,
are the objects as far as Russia is con

Tho- population of Spain is, as nearly as
ire can e-timate, 25,000,000. She has a
standingmrmy of 200,000, and a navy cf
one hundred and fifty vessels, carrying about
two hundred thousand marines and seamen.
Some of these vessels are of the latest and
most improved kind. The population- of
Russia is about seventy million, she has a
standing army of nearly a million men. and
a navy of three hundred vessels of war, car

hundred and fifty thousand marines and
seamen. In her appointments aud equipments,
both on land and sea, she rates with
the first, and is at this time, probably the
most powerful nation in the world.
The possessions of Russia in North America
are reTy considerable. On the North-west
coast of the continent, they extend in length
about eleven hundred miles, with an average
breadth of about five hundred, but the population
is very small, less than 100,000.?
Should the United States engage in a war
with either Spain or Russia she would have
her Hands full, and the war would necessarily
be confined in a great measure to, naval
combats in which she would be worsted-(for
the condition of her navy is very bad indeed,)
unless it should be a war of invasion, in
which case the invading power would- have
vast odds to contend against. As fur as wo
ean see, nothing commensurate with the loss .
she would necessarily suffer could bo gained
by a war with cither country, and it is certain
that we of the South, have no desire to
embark in such a struggle after the bitter
experience of the past.
The Grand Duke Alexis, so we learn, lias
been ordered home by his- papa, on account
of the fracture of Russian relations with the
United States, and the latter is exhibiting
considerable activity in repairing the various
dismembered forts along the southern coast.
It certainly seems as if a speck of war, perhaps
no larger than a man's hand, can be
ieen on the horizon, and it may require but
little to blow up a great storm, which may
sweep with devastating force over many
peaceful, smiling, and happy portions of the
earth.
The Reward orthe Hireling.
Th6nias Jefferson Mackcy, the scullion of
the Robbers, Scott & Co., has received his
reward. He has received and receipted for j
his thirty pieces ef silver. Would it not be
a blessing if he were so to carry out tha role
of Judas, as to go and hang himself?
Mackcy has been Scotts amanuensis and
adviser in preparing his Annual and special
messages to the Legislature, and doing such
?ther duty work about the Executive Kitchen,
and as a reward for his faithfulness to
tho Robber Crew and his treachery to his
Mtive State, has been given the Circuit
JFudgcshipTor the Gth Circuit. Thomas, the
former incumbent, has been turned out to
make way for one still less capable of administering
justice. Mackey has not been admit- i
ted to the Bar longer than a twelvemonth
and knows no more about the science of Law
than, a Fejec Islander does about Sturm is
them,andean no more administer justice,
than Scott can. tell the truth, and although
he may not strive to hide "the brand of the
oonvict under the guise of the inipeachcr,"
ho does endeavor to play the part of a Solomon
under the guise of the monkey and
demagogue.
Strange how strikingly alike the words
Hackey and monkey arc. Tho similarity (
gives some-force to Darwins Theory on the ;
origin of the species.
Disastrous Fite in Abbeville.?Wc
learn from the Columbia Phoenix that a distructive
fire occurcd in the town of Abbeville
on Thursday night the 18th instant. The
Marshall House, a fine, larce brick building
the Court House and the entiro block of
buildings, between those two. on the left
Bide of the main square, were entirely consumed.
Towbridge& Co., whose store was
in the Marshall House, it is said saved the
grater part of their stool* as did also John
Knox, Traegar & Bequest, and Kapham &
Sklara, L II. Ilusseli, J. Knox, Christain &
Wilson and Lee Russell; but the buildings
occupied by the above named parties, togethr
er with all tho smaller buildings on the two !
Blocks, oceupied by freedmen, were destroy- '
ad.
. The books and records in the Court House.
Clerk's, Sheriff's County Treasurer, &c., arc
reported saved. The buildings woro almost i
on entire loss. The damages are estinjatcd
at $7.5,OOOj insurance from $10,000 to $12,
000. Many valuable papers were lost by (
the County officers.
Fortifying the Forts.?We are crcdi- 1
bly informed that orders have been received here
from Washington, to put forts Sumter J
and Moultrie in a good state of defense at
once, and that in pursuance thereof the
mounting guns of heavy calibre will begin
at once. O'encral Qi A. Gilmorc is expect- ^
ed in a few days, under whom the work will
be done. Captain R. T. Renshaw, of the j
L'ght House, has been called to the command
of the iron-clad Woosacle of the South
Atlantic squadron. These warlike prcpara- c
rations are deemed necessary, so the quid
ntiifs say, by the relations now existing between
the United Sta-cs and Spain.? Charles- j

A dispatch from San Francisco says one of t
the Jananese Princesses in the embassy is s
exquisitely beautiful. The Prime Minister f
is dressed orientially; the others a clad in J
outlandis English ready-made clothing.
