Explanation.?It has been a matter of
regret that certain remarks made by us, a
fortnight or three weeks since, in reference
to a case of assault and battery between two
children, have been construed to have meant
a personal affront. What we said was not so
intended, and we hope that our readers will
so understand it. We have nothing to do
with the private affairs of others ftnd arc
careful to avoid notices of that character.
Our aim is to deal only with such mattrs as
concern the nublic.

The Committee on obituaries reported,

Ministers in the State.
SATURDAY.
The remaining Committees reported on
Saturday and some very animated discussions
occurred, but at last the reports were
adopted seemingly to the satisfaction of the
brethren.
The Bev. Dr. Boyce was compelled to
leave on Saturday afternoon, much to the rc|
gret of his numerous fricuds.
SUNDAY.
On Sunday afternoon at a ConvjSntbfcfd?
the Sabbath School, several speakers mfcde
appropriate, remarks, those of theRev.^iC.
Bitting being particularly pathetic.
On Sunday evening, Mr. Bitting proacb^d
to a very large and intelligent audience ih
the Presbyterian Church. Jlis sermon Wes
upon the subject of the demonstrations of
God's providence being at work fo? his people,
and was very eloquent, lucid and scoinetf
to interest his audience deeply. There has
never been, in our recollection, as large an
audience assembled in the Church as on this,
occasion. . '
After the sermon, a hymn was sung with
deep feeling, by the members of the Conven*
tion assisted by the congregation, and the
Vice President, on motion, declared the
Convention adjourned.
We regret that our crowded*"Columns do
not admit of a more extended notice, such
as we would have desired to give the Convention.
as it was one marked by singular
unanimity, and pleasure and profit both to
the members and the community at large.
During their stay, the community threw

who spoke in terms nr'gratitude ofthekindr
