CAMDEN'S. NOVEMBER iiO.
The Present Session oi'ihc Ecgislatiire.
I
. *1
The General Assembly of this Slate met
at the capital on i nest lay Heretofore, the
sessions have been marked by a system of
business and legislation which has done great
harm to the industrial interests of the State
and taken a way all the confidence which the
party Tint in povror were tfispnseu piaeu m
the promises of the legislators. It has been
admitted by a member of the lower House
from this county, that all manner of thieving,
bribery and corruption revelled there during^
the last sc'fiou. to such an extent as to
amaze him. who to his credit, be it said, has
ever b >me a good character in tlus community.
Knt there is nothing tn be gained by
allusions to the past, in this matter, and we
must look to the future, if perchance that
holds out anything of pmui'Se or hope fir us.
Here lately, what must be considered an
attempt to defraud the people, has been dis/?nT7<?r<.(t
niiH although i'arker. the State
Treasurer, has made a statement, yet the
t people know that his finders are deep intci
the pie, nnd his statement must be taken
"cum ijrurv> sdh'g." The white-washing committee,
of which Pennis, the introducer oi
the new-fangled spittoons, is chairman, should
be held to the point and a statement of the
public debt such as will satisfy the people! bi
given. Kinipton. th talented young banker
until recently unknown to fame, who ha:
lined his pockets with our gold, should b(
made to disgorge some of those "commissions
express charges and stamps," which hav<
amounted almost to millions in the last thre<
years. All public servants should be hclt
to a strict accountability and no plundering
be allowed, by the employment of clerks
and the whole army of understrappers whit 1
have heretofore been fed at tbe public crib
It is manifestly impossible that with a sin
gle'session of the Legislature costing 8800,
i i a...i
UUU, tlie IUXCS now ievieu can pujyr nua ouui
besides the interest of the public dob
amounting at the loust calculation to 8700,
000,. and the salaries of officers, -amount-iii;
to nearly 8200,000. ^
It has been sufficiently established tha
the utmost the people can pay, without sale:
of th^ir property, is $300,000, and such ap
^ propn5hnons should bo made as shall nut ex
ceed this sum.
Economy it* expenditures, a gG^P^l cut
We hope that the'Legislature will sec
that these things are done.
OUR COLUMBIA" LETTER
The Ku Klnx Court?The Legislature

Canal.
Columbia, S. C., Nov. 25, 1S71.
The coming week commences a season of
unusual and absorbing interest at the Capital.
On Monday the mighty Ku Klux
Court commences, and Tuesday will witness
the congregation of our learned Legislators.
Judge Loud arrived this afternoon,
and with him. the lion. Keverdy
Johnson, who has been engaged to defend
the parties under the Ku Klux Act. ExA.ttorncy
Gen'l Stan berry will be here on
Monday to assist in the defense. Corbin,lt
is,said, will be supported in the prosecution
by Chamberlain, and perhaps by Worthington.
It seems to be generally understood
that Messrs. Johnson and Stanberry will
confine their arguments to the constitutionJ
ality of the act by authority of which the
prisoners have been arraigned, making one
case a test and leaving individual and special
defences to the conduct of such counsel as
the accused may have severally employed.
The number of arrests made is stated to be
upwards of five hundred, but how many will

is impossible to conjecture. As the constitutional
question is to he raised, it uiay, perhaps,
work a postponement of the things in
the facts of the case until the decision of the
Supreme Court be had. in which event, we
hope, that the unhappy victims of Martial
law wiil at bast bo released on bail. L. E.
Johnson, I'. S. 3 a shal, is a son of Reverdy,
and it will tend no little to heighten the
^interest of the scene to hear the venerable
o.d sire in terms of scathing censure con/
doinn the acts of oppression and tyranny, in
which his son has been the chief instrument.
THE FINANCES.
* Lively times arc expected in the disclos*
urea of the colossal frauds perpetrated in a
financial way, when the Legislature meets.
The thieves are surely at logger-heads now,
and through the workings of their envious
spite one towards another, sonic startling
facts will.probably crop out in further substantiation
of the now almost confessed swindle
in the over-issue of bonds. Kimpton is
here, prepared lie claims, to clear his own
clouded character, and to furnish indisputable
proof of the complicity of .Scott and his
financial Board, together with the House investigation
Committee, of which Dennis is
Chairman, in the fraudulent transactions
charged against tlicui. Dennis' investigating
committee was appointed last winter
ostensibly to examine into the books and accounts
of the financial agent, Mr. Kimpton.
They have held themselves in session in
New York all th" year. draining their six
BLcii feu the State, while they
ng her, or attempting to rob. her
Kimpton has Dennis pinned
ond all chance of escape. Can
p. us he terms it, in black and j

"W liile 011 the one hind, Hampton thus
boldly utters his boas.ful assertion, Scott .
and his Ic-ser satellites, as assiduously belabor
the financial agency and endeavor to fasten
upon Kiuiplou, the responsibility of the
rascalities that have been done.
TIIB I'OOR KXILES
Who have been spending the long and dreary
vacation away from their up-country constituencies,
in Columbia, must hail with delight
the n"ar approach of another harvest,
season..-June 3lobley, Micklc, McDonnell,
in fact, all the exiled members from the Ku
Klux region, except Duncan, of Union,
!?.. tli.i iiill nt' !i lit Ma shon on a back i
street, has managed to keep his head above
water, have worn for mouths past a most
J forlorn and penniless appearance, and were
the day of deliverance not so near, might
perhaps through dire jiccessity be driven to
same In nest employment. Ihe fancy pins,
gold-chains, broadcloth suits riid beaver hats,
with which in palmier days they were wont
.to adorn themselves, have all vanished,
doubtless buried in some pawn-brokers shop
awaiting the resurrection which proper plwsphatie
legislation may bring about during
the session new on hand.
TI1E CANAL. - ,
The work upon the Columbifr Canal is
steadily progressing uuder Sbraguc & Co.,
aud will no doubt be finished so far us the
conditions of the contract with the State require,
within the prescribed time, the first
of March next. The conditions of purchase
were- that they should widen and
deepen the Canal to double its origiual capacity.
This, however, 'Will "not develop a
1 water power of more than 15U0 horse, a
s very insignificant amount when compared
, with 1-1UUU, of which the Ofcnal, as shown by
the ibigniee:: of Sprngue & Co., Maj. Malum,
is susceptible, could the location of the
dam be fixed at the point desired, and whioh
t the owners express their determination eventr
! uallv to elfect, tiiough at present retarded by
. the cupidity of our sovereign legislature.
A biil authorising the proposed change in
the da.n. was introduced intto the Legislature
' last Winter, but was unfortunately lodged
- in the hands of a Committee of which Joe
j Crews was Chairman, and there remained
pigeon-holed from the refusal of Col. I'earee,
^ the Agent, and now one of the members *rt
the lirui of Spraguc & Co., to advance the
3 modc:t suui of S-0.U00, lbr the bcnelit of
1 the Chairman of the Committee, and his
r darker, though not dirtier confreres. The
bdi wiil be revived this sessi <11.

Costly Way of Economizing.?The
- Louisville' Courier-Journal relates this: "Two
handsome young men, without
money, crawled upon the bumpers between
' two cars of a freight train and rode yesterday
from Cincinnati to Louisville. Thii
' mode of travel is known as 'beating the way,
; and is frequently productive of serious rail
road accidents
t "The young men reached this city al
right, and left immediately for Nashville bj
s the same conveyance. The conductor, 0;
" c lurse. knew nothing about their being 01
- the train, as they would dodge about tin
coaches, and keep concealed when the trail
hands came near. The jolts, and stops, ant
je^rks^
wouTcR have thrown nnoni jmacr tne roiling
wheels and crushed them to death. In spite,
however, of all this danger, they pursued
their way, and but for an accident would ero
have reached 'the city of rocks.'
"About two miles from Louisville the
train made a sadden halt, which caught their
i feet between the bumpers' and crushed the
b mes badly, and. fearful of a worse accident,
they jumped off the train. They were badly
wounded and bud no means of getting assistance.
' One of them was named Daniel RHcy.?
lie crawled on the ground for nearly a mile,
and then rode in a wagon the rest of the way
to St. Joseph's Infirmary. The wound will
detain him for some rime. The other young
man. when last seen, was near the place of
the accident. It is not known what became
of him. lie was probably the worst hurt of
the two."
A Stran<jk Accident.?A strange and
extremely unpleasant mistake occurred in
j Hast Doston recently. A new domestic had
! just been engaged by a family on London
j street. The lady of the house had occasion
to use an application of croton oil, and had
. left a bottle of it-in the kitchen. The new
j girl supposed it to be hair oil, and thought
an application would ucncnt nor nair. .^o
j she poured on a good deal of*it. tlicy seldom do
I anything of the kind by halves?and went
: to bed. The effect of it was uot only very
I surprising, but very painful. When she
! arose in the morning her head was as bald
| as the traditional billiard ball, as the oil,
which had run into her eyes, burning her
face and seriously endangering her eyesight.
She was removed to the city hospital for
treatment ?Boston Advertiser.
George Q. Cannon, a Mormon leader, says
if the convictions continue the Mormons will
burn all they have, and make another exodus
asthoy did from Illinois.
One hundred and seventy farmers of
Chester county, Pa., give public notice that
thev will not allow trespassers upon their
premises for purposes of gunning, fishing,
etc. If this determination is carried *>ut.
both game and fish must multiply, and the
nuisance of trespassing be got rid of.
