Thk Weather and Crops.?On Saturday;
Jus tpUuj idea and Vicinity was yisitedjjy
a refreshing rain, causing vegetation to look
as.smiling as possible. Unfortunately, however,
the shower was local, and many1 portions
of the county have received no rain
for six weeks. We learn that cotton is shedding
badly in the neighborhood of Flat
Rock and elsewhere, and that corn Is suffering
extremely. The prospect, therefore, is
but little brighter than it was last week.
Different Opinions.?An internecine
strife is being fiercely waged between the
County Commissioners' and the Auditor,?
They desire him to occupy a room at the
Court House, while he insists tliat-his office
should be adjacent that of -the Treasurer, inasmuch
as they arc "birds of a feather," and
therefore, ought to "flock together." . . They
say that he is bound to occupy any office they
choose to -.give him, while lie points them to
the County Treasurer, who has an office
where it suits hip, they allowing him to rent
it, and, a priori, lie should be allowed to do
the same. The latest touch is to put the
Auditor and Treasurer into one office. ' Inter

A P,ean of Praise.?On Saturday night
about 10. o'clock P. M., just as we were
closing our labors for the woek, all at once
there fell upon our listening ear, the most,
ravishing melody. We looked up and down
and around, and tried to look under, to sec
whcnco it came. Finally it flashed upon
us, that it must bo the Camden Brass Band, I
discoursing *a symphony of praise for the
delightful rain that had just fallen. Such
"sweet thunder" we did not think, candidly,
tlicv could "tfroducc, considering tho short
time they have been practicing. We have
iioted with pleasure their great improvement,
and it* we were not bashful, would
thank them fur their serenade, which was
not uvcant for us.
%
Farewell, a Last, Loxn, .Sap, Farewell
!?We allude now to the Court House,
iail, Poor House Farm, its mule and wagon,
its 12,000 feet of lumber and 8,000 l'inc
shingles, the tables and desks, advertised for
sale next Monday, by the -Coroner, at the
suit of the Sheriff. Looking uP?n these
relics in the abstract, considering them
merely aa Court House, or a jail, a poor
house farm, or a mute, a foot of lumber, or a
pjue shingle, a table, or a desk, we cannot
eonecive any particular fondness for them.
Nothing are more common than these, but
in this particular instance, when we reflect
that these are, in a measure, our owe, that
we paid somewhat for then), that we .have
id mi red the lofty proportions of the Court
House, and praised its acoustic properties,
*azed with pleasure (?) upon the ruins of
the old jail, atxi in a manner, en viol the |
poor house its inule ami wagon, a feeling of
decided melancholy broods over our spirit, md
we are tempted to think of the eouiity
stripped of ail its property, and cast loose
upon the cold charity of the world. Ia faefc,
we are blue about the matter. We wish
somebody would stop the thing before it is
too late. But the time draws near, and for
fear it may not be stoppod, we make our
idieus. Nevertheless, we would like
i hair out of that mule's tail, or a spoke
of that wagon's wheel, a toot of that
lumber, or one pine shiuglc, for a memento
of the mournful occasion. What brutes those
Jaunty Commissioners must feci themselves
to be, WjIP are the cause of this thing.
A Gekat Inducement.?The South Ca-'
rolina Land and Immigration Association,
conducted by Messrs. Butler, Chadwiek,
Gary & Co., in answer to a letter from a
distinguished eitizen of our county, say, under
date of July 27, 1871:
* * - xl.^x
"Am regards your suggestion tm yui
agents should ha authorized to announce
that the money derived &on sale of our
tickets in* the district named (Kershawy)
should be applied to the settlement of a
colony ip your neighborhood, we unhesitatingly
authorize you to promise the same in
our name." "
Wo thus hare s certainty of benefit to be
done to our entiro people, in this promise.
Let us consider that the end for which many
efforts have been mode, is at last within our
reach, and that it depends upon ourselves
alone. whether this splendid offer shall be
met in the right spirit. Should our people
wake to a proper appreciation of the benefit
to be derived from the settlement of a colony
of intelligent laborers cf the white race
-*?.c * .? w vv-e- ? ?
our midst, we think we can safely predict
that all will feeh the advantages of such an
influx of business, nod that in a short time
other colonies wUi follow the lead, thereby
contributing to the material'wealth and pros- \
perity of every citiscnof thecounty. !
The remedy for many ef our evib is thus
brought to our very doors, and enterprise
and energy alone are needed to seize upon
it. No-more advantageous .proposition could
bo made than this one. It is needless to detail
its advantages, because they aro known
and appreciated by every thiukipg- man.?
Let us, then, show our earnestness by closing
with this handsome offer. The letter
