i AGRICULTURAL. From I ho Lancaster Ledger. Our Samples. Til'* Auri' -ulluVaT Society is otic of our lU'.'st usClUl associations. It has milk'*! iv.'fc- to the tentorial wealth of ' the counlV tlir.ri ar.$ other merely so- ! eial organirifjoil. It has imparted a stimulus a HI enterprise to practical farming n<"ver before known in tliis ' section. And no part of the S ate lias ' developed in ore new and important , principles in Agricultural science. : There is no necessity nor propriety in i us buying flour and corn from North Carolina, when these articles can be ! produced so successfully by ourselves. J The samples exhibited by Willis (Jreg- . ory, Ks<p, arc good proof of what skill and energy can do in the production of bread-stuffs. Wheat that yields from forty two to fifty-flve pounds of g' od flour to the bushel (and the bushels per ' acre corresponding") liberally remunerates the farmer.' i J is Lytic 11 variety is rather the best?yielding more bushels per acre arid more pounds of flour to the bushel. His Spring variety is a su j i pcrior article?being as sure a crop as the old Alabama and yielding much , more to the acre. Four varieties were ! f exhibited and all were found very good. ! It would pay the unskillful to go to 31 r. Gregory and learn his method of prc~ pariDg his ground and cultivating his crops. 31 r. Brown's wheat Was equal ! in quality; but the yield per acre was not quite so great. With him wheat: is not a specialty?though it receives commendable attention, lie finds great advantage frotn changing his seed every year from one plantation to the oth. er. There is no necessity for Mr. Kogers to go to Texas when he can grow corn 1G feet high with from 2 to f> shoots od the stalk. Any farmer who has a few hours leisure time will do well to visit Mr. llogers' entire crop. Fellow-citizens, let us give more attention to farming. It will pay better. Observer. From the Charleston News. The Cotton Crop of 1870 in So- Garolina and Georgia. Its Prospects and Probable Amoimt. Allendale, S. C., August 15. I have been requested by several pro-- ! ihiueut plauters to give, through The i News my opinion of the present crop, ' snd as all c'asses in our country are . ?x.jr.a I iuorc or less interested in tue jiiuuuvuuii i of the great staple of the South, it may ; t?e proper for those who arc experienced in the production of cotton, and have made extensive observation, to state the coudition and prospect of the growing crop. Any experienced ami'practical planter can about ascertain, by this time, what bis crop will make, l'liavc never known, for more than twenty years' experience, such an effort uud determination on the part of plantcis, both small aod / large, to make every acre of cotton do its best. To this end, the vast stock of fertilizers of every brand ^?must have been exhausted. Some, arn\ bitious to excel, applied it extravagantly, from S15 to $25 per acre, but generally from $8 to $12. The crops of cotton looked well as- a gen- j [ eral tiling, and in most in-tunecs were ; , <piitc flattering, until about the 20th of _ July, when on account of adverse sea- I sons, the plant was brought to a sudden , check, causing it to east off its top or ! immature fruit; a little later the rust I made its appearance, and now our fields present the aspect of late fall. It is too late in the season for cotton - to add anything by commencing a second growth now. Two-thirds of what we hoped to make the middle of July , is the ultimatum of what will be realized, and I seriously think one-half will come nearer the reality. I control several plantations in South Carolina and Georgia, and my visits to and fro, and in various other cotton regions in these two States, afford me extensive observations, and 1 give it as my opin ion' that this must Do a disastrous year j to the cotton planters of tlic country! unless cotton should rule as hlrrh as last : winter. This crop cannot dear the ; * expense of making it under twen'y ' cents. Twenty cents may save the producer, but will not remunerate liirn j this year. fro confident arc the j ' planters that that the crops will ' be short, that they will hold back the ! balk of it for a better market. 1 have 1 - conversed with many of our most prac- J tical planters, and they concur with me in*-the opinion that the crop will be J short, and that the planter should, by all means, keep his cotton until next spring, after selling enough to relieve his factor for advances. .
