Cause of the Failure of Select Cotton
Seed.
Editors Chronicle & Sentinel: The
writer lias heard several complaints of ^

sccdssold by Mr. Dickson, of Hancock, ^
and also by Mr. 'Dickson, of Oxford,
and others have turned out to bo no
more prolific than ordinary upland seed. E

this failure and it is suggested in the

sers of these seeds may yet profit by jv

The greatest and most common error 11
in culture of cotton is deep plowing.? j'
Let any man try it impartially and in '
any ordinary season in which a rain ,,,

The roots of the cotton plant spread ^

of prolific cotton raised from the same Si
seed, but' by two men, one of whom

of the first is crowded with open bolls'
from top to bottom, while the stalks ?
from the latter party's field have no _
bolls at all scarcely except toward the j.

One planter stimulated his crop by proper
culture, while the ether only hurt
it by his system, and never allowed it to
bear fruit until he stopped workins it.

the so called failure in select seeds re- v
suited from the fault here indicated.?

from the same seed, clearly indicates the I

Wood Ashes As A Fertilizer.? ,
This is one of the most valuable for- ?
tilizcrs within tlic reach of the farmer.
The uuleachcd article has the most
potash, but the leached is thought
to be quite as valuable. In leached they
shrink a good deal, and lime is usally L
added which increases their value. They
arc generally sold too, at a less price.
Ashes arc well suited to all farm crops,
and are very beneficial in the fruit yard
and orchard. Most farmers still sell
wood in the cities aud villages and
rather than ~go hotne } empty, they
should carry back ashes and other fertilizers,
to replace the potash, lime and
phosphoric acid that have been carried
