POETRY. (BY REQUEST.) THE PIPES OFLUCKNOW. BY JOHN O. WHTTIER. [This historical incident, upon which these beautifuljlines are written occurred during the Sepoy rebellion in the East Indies. The garrison at Lucknow was surronnded by overwhelming numbers of Sepoys and was reduced io the point of starvation and almost Co despair, when a Scotch lasic heard the pipes of a Highland regiment coming to their relief:] Pipes of the misty moorland, Voice of the glen and hill, The drone of highland^torrent, The song of lowland rill; Not the braes of broom and heather, Nor the mountains dark with rain, Nor maiden's bower nor border tower, Have heard your sweetest ptrain | Dear to the lowland reaper, And plaidcd mountaineer, To the cottage and castle The Scottish pipes are dear, 8wect sound the ancient pibroch. O'er mountain, loch and glade ; But sweetest of all music The pipes of Lucknow played. Day by day the Indian tiger Louder yelled and nearer crept; Round and round the jungle serpent Nearer and nearer circles swept, Pray for rescue wives Jand mothers, Pray to-day, "the soldier said, For to-morrow death's between us, And the wrong and shame we dread." Oh, they listened, looked and waited, Till their hope became despair, And tne sods oi low newamng Filled the pauses of their prayer, Then up spake the Scottish maiden, With her ear upon the ground: Dinna ye hear it, dinna ye bear it, The pipes of Havelock sou..d." Hushed the wounded man his groaning ; Hushed the wife her little ones; Alone tbcy heard the drum roll, And the roar of the Sepoy's guns, But to sounds of home and childhood The Highland ear was true; Dinna ye hear,?'tis the slogan ; Will ye no believe it noo." Like the march oi soundless music, Through the vision of the seer, More of feeling than of hearing, Of the heart than of the ear. She knows the droning pibroch, She knew the Campbell's call: Hark, hear ye noo McGregor's? The grandest o' them all. Oh, they listened, dumb and breathless, And they caught the sound at last; Faint, and beyond the Goomtee, Rose and fell the piper's blast; Then burst the wild thanksgiving, Minded woman's voice and man's : "God be praised?the march of Ilavelock, 'Ti8 the piping of the clans." Louder, nearer, fierce as vengeance, Sharp and shrill as swords at strife. Game the wild McGregor'*clan calfr Stinging all the air to life. Gut when the far off dust cloud To plaided legions grew, Full Tenderly, blithsomely The pipes of rescue blew. Round the silver domes of Lucknow, Round Red Dowlah's golden shrine Breathed the air to Briton's dearest, The ear of Auld Lang Syne. O'er the cruel roll of war drums, Rose that sweet and homelike strain, And the tartan clove the urban, As the Goomtee cleaves the plain. Dear to the lowland reaper And the plaided mountaineer, To the cottage and the castle The pipers song is dear. THE MANIA FOIlCOTTON PLANTING. Muscogee Co, Ga., Jan. 22, 1869. Mr. Editor: Another year has dawn CO upuu luriuurs, unugiug iu no naiu varied duties; trials of temper and of patience have to be met and overcome. It is indeed a difficult matter for our old farmers and planters to become accustomed to the new order of things ; to throw aside those old habits in which they have grown gray is like extracting the very jnarrow from their bones. I freely sympathize with them in their distress; and byway of relief to their galled feelings, would suggest that they turn over their farming interest to their sons. Youth can adapt itself to circumstances better than old ago. Here and hereabouts, farmers have Buckled on their armour fur the coming fray between themselves and mother earth, and earth's numerous progeny. Freedmen?those of them that are pleasantly located, and have kind and gentfemanly employers or super in fendents (overseers have, by common consent, been tabooedon plantations)?have commenced the year's work in earnest, and so far exhibited a comraonuatue disposition to make something for their employers, as well as for themselves. On every side of me the cry is cotton. From river and creek bottoms to the most sterile pincy-wood farm that Shingle Hill can boast, all cry is cotton for the year '69. Every rich Bpot of ground is reserved for the 6taple, and for the poor spots every out house is being raked, the fence corners scraped, old bone, soapsuds and ashes car.fully preserved, and even the woods in places have had to yield up their treasures to enrich the old and worn fields, to cause a boll of cotton to grow where none grew before. Even the frcedinen have caught the infection, and Sambo's eyes fairly glisten at the sight of old bone. Some few, ? I have no quarrel with farmers who are straining to their enargics, as well as their purses, to enrich their lands. This is well enough; it is certainly money in their pockets if properly carried out. But I would, in all candor and seriousness, advise that their com, peas, potatoes, turnips, and gardens should also feel the fructifying effects of their fertilizers. Think well, farmers, before you pitch your crops. You know as well as I do that wc cannot afford to make cotton now for less than 18 to 20 cents r\?r noiind?at 1.5 cents we barelv nav J r J expenses. The remunerating price for cotton the present season has stirred the energies of blrick as well as white, and it follows that every acre will be seeded that can possibly be cultivated, and, with propitious seasons, we may anticipate a heavy crop and a slim price. Yours, Ac., Pine Hill. A Fact for Farmers.?It may not be generally known that the seed of the sunflower is the most infallible remedy yet discovered for the speedy cure of founder in horses. The directions which we glean from a brief article upon the subjectin the E sex Banner, says : "Immediately on discovering that your horse is foundered, mix a pint of the white seed in his food, and it will effect a perfect cure.
