POETRY.
NOT.ALL A FLJETINO SHOW. i
This world's not all a fleeting show,
For our delusion given ;
They who've escaped transgression's woe, I
And walked in virtue's ways, do know,
There's something here of Heaven. (
This world's not all illusion vain,
To shadows giving birth ;
They who have toveu win sun nwiuuuu
That Heaven ?et suffers to remain
Some solid bliss on earth.
Uovr false the spirit of that gloom, ^
Which utters forth its wails, u
And sings of flowers that never bloom, c
IJcni joys?joys flown too soon?
And woes that life nssnils; a
That voils earth's beauty in a cloud,
And heaves perpetual sighs, (
O'er trouble grieves both long and loud,
In fancied sorrows e'er is bowed, v
And sees no brighter skier. (
Turn thou, my soul, from such lament, v
A merrier accent know;
Bear nobly up when ills are sent,
Enjoy the good till life is spent, n
And chcerly, clrecrly go. I
For this good world's not all a show, f
For our illusion given ;
They who've escaped transgression's woe '
And they who've loved do surely know a
There's much, e'en here, of Heaven

There is a certain portion of the war that
ill never go into the regular histories, nor
e embodied in romance or novertv. which is
very real pari of it. itn<l will, if prcscrv:d,
onvey to succeeding generations a better
ica of the spirit of the conflict than ninny
rv reports or careful narratives of everts,
nd this part may be called the gossip, the
un, the pathos of the war. This illustrates
he character of the leaders, the humor of
he soldiers, the devotion of the women, the
iravery of men, the pluck of our heroes, the
omance ntid hardships of the service.
The Valiant and Brave Hearted, the Ticuresquc

the Tender and Pathetic, and the
