Trutii Fitly Spoken.?An exchange
has the following paragraph :
In the late struggle for independence,
says a practical writer, the
North conquered the South. A greater
and more signal victory remains
for the South to conquer herself. Old
pursuits arc to be changed, old habits
abandoned, and her prejudices must
be weeded out before she can again
renew her prosperous career. Mr Carey
has laid down an axion in political
economy which time and experience
demonstrate: "A country which
grows and exports its raw productions,
must end by exporting its inhabitants,
or starve," Last year, the
South planted cotton, to the neglect
of corn and grain; now large districts
are destitute?no bread to cat. The
lesson is too dear to be lost. Florida,
owing to the goodness of her climate,
abundance of fish and game, is in a
measure exempt from the calamity i
' r? ,1 r\ \ i
weighing so heavily upon doutn v-ur-;
olina ami Georgia. Still she shares
in the general distress.
A Move in tiie RruiiT Direction.
?Several young men of this city entered
upon the duties of cotton-markers
and menders yesterday. They
have determined to put their shoulders
to the wheel, and the present
movement is only the initiative.? |
This business has long been confined i
to persons who, though attentive and j
efficient, could never rise, and they
can easily, find employment in some
other vocation. There arc at present
a number of young men in this city
"who are out of employment, and ]>}*
devoting themselves to this business,
they wiii not only be making some
money, but will be acquiring a
knowledge of the cotton business,
whi.ch may ultimately prove of great
advantage to them.

Oil of Jack tss.?A physician in j
Bridge water, Massachusetts, was rc- j
centlv called to presenile lor someilliterate
old lady, and as cod liver
oil in his opinion, was the prescription
for the apothecary to put up with
the Latin formula, 0!e. Jec. Ass.,
being the abbreviation of Oleum
Jecoris Assei, or in plain English,
cod h'rer oil. The medicine was procured,
taken, and in a few weeks the
lady completely recovered her health, j
A neighbor" paid her a visit, and expressing
surprise at her improved
condition, inquired the secret of so
rapid a restoration. Why," said the j
old lady lifting both hands in grate-!
fel enthusiasm, "it was that beautiful j
medicine, the Oil of Jackass, that
brought me to my fcet rgain.

Wheat and Fr.ouu.?During a
flying visit to the upper part of the .
Stato. last week, we received thcgratifying
intelligence that the prospect
of an abundant wheat crop were so
excellent that flour had already commenced
to tumble in price. In Greenville
on Wednesday, it was offered at.
$6.25 per hundred; while in Abbeville
and Anderson it is stated that it j
is still lower. "The good time coming'
may not be so far off after all.
