p poetry" THE SWORE OF ROBERT LEE. BY FATHER ABRYM J. RTAN, Author of " The Conquered Banner." Out of its scabbard, where full long It Blumbered peacefully, Roused from its rest by the battle song, Shielding the feeble, smiting the strong, Guarding the right, avenging the wrong? Gleamed the sword of Lee. Chorut? No purer sword led braver band, Nor braver bled for a brighter land, Nor brighter land had a cause as grand, * Nor cause a chief like Lee. Forth from its scabbard, high in air, Beneath Virginia sky? And they who saw it gleaming there, And knew who bore it, knelt to swear That where that sword led they would dare ' To follow and to die. Forth from its scabbard! how we prayed That sword might victor be! And when our triumpn was aeiayeu, And many a licart grew sore afraid, We still hoped on, while gleamed the blade Of noble Robert Lee. Forth from its scabbard ! all in Tain! Flashed the sword of Lee! . 'Tis shrouded now in its sheath agnin! It sleeps the sleep of our noble slain, Defeated, yet without a stain, Proud and peacefully. From the Yorkville Enquirer. GUANO AS A FERTILIZER. Our farmers complain' a good deal of the poor soil and worn out condition of their lands; yet few of them have ever made any energetic and continued efforts to improve them.? The experience of others, however, bothin thisaudother countries, proves that old and waste lands can, by the use of proper means, be restored to their former vigor, and thus become profitable to their owners. In illustration of this fact, we publish the .r-11?: AT,. lUllUVYiLlg CAUdtL Ul a IVtlU 11 Ulil 1U1< R. Norfleet, of Edgecombe County, N. C., addressed to John R. London, of Rock Hill. Mr. Norfleet is -widely known as one of the' most enterprising and successful fanners of the old North State, and his experience in the use of fertilizers may be profitably studied by our people. The "Soluble Pacific Guano," which he" recommends, may be obtained from John R. London, at Rock Hill, or J. N. Robson, Charleston: " The application of all concentra ted manures is a matter of greater importance, than most people attach it. They should be distributed as evenly as possibly, or each acre should have its requisite amount, and every furrow its equal share, aud uniform, or the most benefical results cannot be obtained. The greater portion of our farmers use about 200 pounds per acre, applied in the furrow or drill, for cotton. If the furrows are 3? feet apart, which is the usual distance given here, there will be in this case, 60 rows to the acre, consequently, each row seventy yards long, should have 3J pounds of Guano. Raw hands should have this quantity weighed out to them at first, and if they have any tact at all, they will soon acquire the habit of distributing it as equally as all practicable purposes will require. As to its comparative value with other measures, it certainly, from one year's use only, ranks very high, giving results fully equal in all cases to Peruvian, and, in many, far superior. Some of them I should not believe, if I had not the actual knowledge of the facts. In one, Pacifie made an increase of 133, while Peruvian made but 62 per cent., the latter costing 61 per cent, more than the former. I have used more Guano, probably, for the number of acres worked, than any other man in the South. In conversing with farmers in regard to its use, I make it a point to jmpress on the beginner, that one thing must be observed, and never neglected, if he wishes to get its full benefit. He must keep a clean crop until it is laid by, ? ana: particularly so in the Spring.? It gives an impetus to grass that is wonderful to the close observer, and frequently, half of its value is exhausted by the early grass, and, therefore, too little of its elements are left to ma ture the crop of cotton?and it is in that way the Guano* is often charged with a failure, that in truth, should be placed elsewhere. Other fertilizers are used here with success, but I conceive they will lose caste. It requires much integrity of purpose to keep up the manufactured fertilizers to the proper standard. In this one thing, Mr. Reese stands pre-eminent. I have known and dealt with him for many years, and have always found him a straight forward and honorable gentleman. For corn, I would advise 300 pounds or even more, and always used broadcast, as evenly as possible. I am satined. that two acres of land manured with 250 pounds of ground raw hones; will make more, or at least as much corn, as 3 acres with the same quantity; but this thing is somehow or other always resisted, or nearly so by the farmer. He must have the 4? greatest number of acres possible- to operate upon. At this time it behooves the farmer to make as much as possible on as few acres, which will enable him to put a larger number in cotton. W agon Making and Repairing REPAIRING CARRIAGES, BUGGIES, &C. In presenting the Automatic Orgiir, we boldly announce the greatest triumph in mu sical instruments of the age. During tli'c I pa^t-balf cetffiiry, the French and Germans diore manufactured. reed instruments with aoiible bellows, and ^vo pedals for the feet to operate; but the want of. the reversed or exhaustion bellows, (whicfi is the only bellows used In our instruments,) made it impossible for then! to produce the mellow, rich and mellow tone for which our instruments are celebrated. ' Another objection to this method of blowing was, that both feet being occupied, no opportunity was offered for the management of the swell. "Within the past two yea raj instruments constructed on this Europcnn plan of "double "bellows" have been raanufacturadin thi? country, and-to*counteract this difficulty (waut of-a swell) a lever has been projected from the centre of the instrument, to net on the swell, and operated by the knee; The inconvenience and contortion necessary to effect this object, arc disagreeable enough tp a gentleman, but to a lady ,th<? use of such an appendage is nearly impossible. Our Automatic device obviates this "difficulty entirely, the simple act of blowing with more or less force giving the desired increase or decrease in the volume of the tone. We predict for this invention a brilliant futiire. MELODEON AND SCHOOL OEGANFor seventeen years the superior excellence of our Melodeons has not been questioned, and for two years past the enormous demand has made it impossible, for us to meet our orders promptly. With our increased facilities we feci warranted in assuring our patrons that their orders will be promptly met, and solicit a continuance of their patronago. GEO. A. PRINCE & CO."
