honor; to Have the distracting questions that disturb

South is ready without flinching to discharge those

TELEGRAPHIC INTELLIGENCE,
Washington. Aug. 9.
A few days ago, four slaves, belonging to
Messrs. Toombs ami Stephens, Representatives
from Georgia, were concealed by the abolitionists,
and kept hidden'until last night, when an
attempt was made to run them off.
The police having heard of the affair, immediately
pursued and about f<>ur miles from this
city overtook a carriage containing the four
negroes and one white man. The police were
fired upon from the carriage, and were forced
themselves to use their arms, by which two of
the men were wounded badly. The whole
party has been recovered and brought back except
a slave of Mr. Stephens, and they have
been imprisoned to await fuilher investigation.
